💡Clean Ammonia on Demand 💚

About us

We're Nium 👋 🌏💚🔬 (pronounced Nee-Yum) We're nanoscientists, engineers and entrepreneurs: a team and technology built to eliminate emissions at scale. Nium was born at Carbon13, Cambridge in Spring 2022. Our nanocatalytic solutions were developed by our CTO over 2 years at the UK synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source. Why Ammonia? Ammonia is a building block to our lives, precursor to half of global food, a key to a cleaner future of food and fuel. But Ammonia production is dirty - the most polluting chemical industrial process on the planet - 96% of it depends on the century-old Haber-Bosch process, and relies on burning fossil fuels. Our patent pending, 'Clean Ammonia on Demand' system provides a scalable, efficient, effective, alternative. We reduce the pressure, temperature and overall energy in ammonia catalysis, removing the need for fossil fuels. Clean Ammonia on Demand brings science backed benefits across multiple hard-to-abate sectors. * We can eliminate fertiliser emissions, 1.4%, 450 megatonnes of CO2 annually * We can eliminate a further 3% of maritime CO2 emissions by using clean ammonia to power ships, instead of fossil fuels. *All while giving a versatile vector to green hydrogen energy as we race to decarbonise energy, steel, aviation and other critical industrial processes. Why 'On Demand?' Today the majority of the ammonia we use is made in China and Russia at massive industrial plants burning coal, gas and oil. We decouple ammonia production from these fossil plants. Using renewable power and our novel nanocatalyst, we synthesise ammonia at a fraction of the price and pollution of traditional Haber-Bosch. Our Clean Ammonia Army of supporters and investors includes Agfunder, DCVC, BMW Respond, Octopus Ventures, The Sustainable Markets Initiative, The Greenhouse, and Carbon13 - The Venture Builder for the Climate Emergency. #Ammonia #GreenAmmonia #GreenAmmoniaOnDemand #Nium #WeareNium

So…the King made a film for us... 👑 Ok, not exactly... But we caught your attention 👀 The Nium team recently got together at Diamond Light Source Harwell Science and Innovation Campus with RE:TV to create a film to build understanding about Green Ammonia and Nium's mission to provide Green Ammonia on Demand globally. Who are RE:TV ? ‘RE:TV was launched by His Majesty The King in 2020, when he was Prince of Wales. As our editor-in-chief, he gave us clear guidance on the principles and priorities for us to follow, and his long-standing commitment to the environment continues to inspire us today. As he said in 2020, "We've got to come together as a world on this."’ Communicating these initiatives is so important The environmental impacts of ammonia production are widely known within the industries we are targeting, but there isn't as much awareness on the solutions - Many buyers don't know that Green Ammonia on Demand could be an option for them in the very near future. By reducing the emissions associated with ammonia production, we can create a pathway to green hydrogen for use in sectors like transport and heavy industry. Incase you haven't seen our recent posts, we wanted to share the film with you again: https://lnkd.in/eWCEvre4 We're committed to our mission to reducing carbon emissions by providing green ammonia on demand. "Ammonia has the best properties amongst carbonless fuel options." Let's explore 👇 Shipping accounts for around 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In total, the shipping sector emitted about 845 MtCO2eq and was responsible for 3% of total global GHG emissions in 2023. Emissions increased 4.7% between 2020 and 2021 . Of the energy that goes into powering these ships, 94% comes from fossil fuels. 50% of ships are powered by heavily polluting bunker oil, literally “the bottom of the barrel”. LNG, a supposedly ‘cleaner’ fuel that is currently available, has high methane emissions. Over 80% of the global trade, including food, energy, and medicine is delivered by a world fleet of over 100, 000 vessels. It´s equivalent to 1.5 tons of goods per person per year.  The IEA estimates that 44% of global shipping fuel will be ammonia by 2050. Imagine the impact of producing 2 tonnes of clean ammonia every day, well...Exciting news 😲 🎉 We're excited to be a part of TH2ISTLE 💚 A proposal to create a Hydrogen Valley in the North East of Scotland. We'll be working with a group of 30 world-class partners, including Aberdeen City Council , bp, Energy Transition Zone Ltd, Hydrasun, Net Zero Technology Centre and Scottish Enterprise, to create a sustainable hydrogen economy that reduces carbon emissions and supports the transition to renewable energy. What's a Hydrogen Valley? 🤔 A Hydrogen Valley is a geographical area where hydrogen is made, moved, stored and used in multiple ways – like a Hub. Simple, right? So, why Aberdeen? The North East is Scotland’s oldest hydrogen hub, and Aberdeen has successfully delivered collaborative EU hydrogen projects that continue to run to date. Project, TH2ISTLE in short 👇 The TH2ISTLE concept envisions an expansion of the region’s hydrogen capabilities.A demand-led, interconnected set of hydrogen activities would begin to decarbonise interesting sectors like agriculture, distilleries and off-road vehicles, among others. Coordinated by Aberdeen City Council, the TH2ISTLE consortium involves partners from industry, public sector, academia and international replicators. This includes almost 20 local supply chain companies experienced in the energy industry who will deliver key components and expertise. 👉 Nium's role in the project 😎 Specifically, this funding would enable us to co-locate Nium’s proprietary green ammonia synthesis nanotechnology on TH2ISTLE's primary hydrogen production site with direct integration to electrolysers. Nium’s mild operating conditions remove the requirement for hydrogen compression and storage as well as reducing the energy consumed for ammonia synthesis, so our technology is well suited to renewable energy sources. This EUR9 million proposal was submitted to a European funding competition for Hydrogen Valleys earlier this year. If successful, the TH2ISTLE project would start in early 2025. We're very excited to be playing an important role in this project, stay tuned for updates ... 👀 #hydrogen #ammonia #hydrogenvalley #sustainableenergy #cleanammonia #nium #wearenium #renewables #renewableenergy #solarenergy #alternativeenergy

What are the impact potentials of clean ammonia? Below, we look at two graphs which show current emissions in the ammonia value chain. Our work, producing clean ammonia on-site and on-demand, directly influences "scope 1" emissions from production (Which accounts for 450 MtCO2) - but with smart planning and partnerships, we have the potential to expand the impact of our work by influencing the other stages in the ammonia supply chain. The second graph provides a detailed breakdown of Scope 3 emissions, revealing that direct N2O field emissions are the largest contributors at 379 MtCO2e, followed by urea field emissions and urea synthesis at 130MtCO2e and 120MtCO2e respectively. Decentralised, on demand ammonia production could also reduce the 40 MtCO2e of transport emissions. Eliminating long distance transport might also make the management of ammonia much easier, helping displacing at least part of the urea value chain emissions (total of 250 MtCO2e). Our collaboration on projects like 'Project Koala' demonstrates the potential of combining Nium’s innovative ammonia synthesis technology with green hydrogen production from waste biomass. 🐨 Project Koala: https://lnkd.in/dg2RkJJq This circular, decentralised approach not only reduces direct production emissions but also mitigates broader environmental impacts by creating a sustainable and localised ammonia production process. By continuing to develop such strategic partnerships, we aim to influence Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions, paving the way for a more sustainable and decarbonised future. Making fertiliser uses huge amounts of ammonia that is produced by the Haber-Bosch Process. This accounts for 420 Mt or 2% of annual global CO2 emissions. But how can we cut emissions when we need this fertiliser to feed half the world’s population? Nium's mission is to decarbonise ammonia production by creating a green alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. Nium needed to optimise their technology and bring it to a scale where it could demonstrate full process kinetics, quickly. TTP deployed a team to design and build a bespoke reactor for ammonia production and a PLC-controlled test stand. This 1000X scaled-up “Minion Mk2” reactor enabled Nium to capture the data needed to demonstrate the performance of their nanotechnology at the industrial scale. What are the opportunities for emissions reductions in the fertiliser supply chain? 🤔 If you need more background context, see this previous post instead to read our full impact report: https://lnkd.in/eecTfb4Y • Ammonia production is responsible for direct CO2 emissions of 450 Mt and indirect emissions of 290 Mt. • Non-CO2 GHG emissions add another 662 MtCO2e to the mix. • The annual energy consumption for ammonia production is a staggering 8.6 EJ, with a significant portion coming from natural gas (70%), coal (25%), and oil/electricity (4%). So, let's talk about solutions ... By replacing the traditional Haber-Bosch process with innovative Nium nano catalytic technologies, we can revolutionise the hydrogen source from fossil fuels to water or biogas, and switch the energy source to renewables. 🔍 What does this mean? • A potential carbon footprint per tonne of ammonia of 0.082 tonsCO2 (wind) to 1 tonsCO2 (solar), compared to the 1.6-3.8 tonsCO2 of the traditional Haber-Bosch process. • Decentralised, on-demand ammonia production could slash transport emissions by about 30 MtCO2/year. • Elimination of long-distance transport could also reduce urea value chain emissions, totaling up to 250 MtCO2/year. In total, clean ammonia on demand could potentially reduce: • Direct emissions: Up to 315 MtCO2/year. • Value chain emissions: Up to 320 MtCO2/year. Looking into the future... Ammonia demand is expected to grow. Under current trends, cumulative direct emissions from ammonia production could amount to around 28 Gt by 2100, equating to 6% of the emissions budget for limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. A market share of just 3% by 2030 could lead to annual reductions of 3.3-7 Mt under the IEA’s Sustainable Development Scenario, and even higher reductions under the Stated Policies scenario.
