The Restart Project
Computers and Electronics Manufacturing
The Restart Project is a people-powered social enterprise that aims to fix our relationship with electronics
About us
The Restart Project is a London-based social enterprise and charity empowering people to use their electronics longer in order to reduce waste. We help people learn to repair their own electronics in community events and in workplaces, and speak publicly about repair and resilience. We campaign for our Right to Repair in the UK, and we are a founding member of the European Right to Repair Campaign. By working with us on reducing e-waste, you help us scale our social and environmental impact.

For #WorldEnvironmentDay, we want to celebrate all the amazing repairers in our community that are doing their bit to save our planet one repair at a time 🔧 Repair keeps products alive for longer, delaying the need for new production, and saving resources and greenhouse gas emissions ☁️ We know that reuse and repair form the basis of an efficient circular economy - so let's make it the norm! 🌱

It's the UK's Earth Overshoot Day, meaning that our natural resources have run dry only 156 days into the year ⏰️ That means that we are consuming at a higher rate than 166 other countries and are pretty much on par with China (whose date falls only 2 days before ours) Our electronic waste and overproduction is a major part of this issue - we're the second highest producers of e-waste in the whole world and it's not a title to be proud of! 😡 So what can we do to help tackle this issue? We need to reduce our consumption rapidly in all areas of life and that includes electronics 🔧 Luckily, the community repair movement and #RighttoRepair campaigners are at the forefront of this issue. By manufacturing products that are made to be repairable and sharing these skills in our communities, we can extend the lives of our products and stop depleting the earth's precious resources at such a pace 🪛 Let's keep making the world a more repairable and environmentally conscious place and #movethedate of Earth Overshoot Day!

Last year, we investigated a reuse and recycling centre in London and found that out of almost 600 products that members of the public had brought to be recycled, 36.2% of them were in working condition, and an additional 9.5% could be reused after minor repairs 🔧 We could barely imagine what that would look like on a national scale, how much money, resources and materials could be saved. So now, we're on a mission to find out - and you can help! We’re looking for volunteers to join us on a deep dive into the world of Household Waste and Recycling Centres. Together we’ll investigate how many offer opportunities to reuse products, and we’ll have conversations with the staff on the ground about their work and the barriers they may face to moving beyond recycling. Want to be a citizen scientist? We're having an information session next week to share details about the project and how you can get involved. Book a slot at:
