Today, Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood outlined the government's steps to prevent a potential collapse in the prison system. The government will publish a 10-year capacity strategy this year, detailing the steps needed for comprehensive prison reform. To address prison capacity issues, we will temporarily adjust release laws, allowing some prisoners to be released early to create prison space while keeping the most dangerous offenders off our streets. To support this, the Lord Chancellor announced plans to recruit 1,000 additional trainee probation officers by 2025 to alleviate the workload on current staff. Finally, there will be a focus on providing the public with greater clarity and more transparent information about the prison system. Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ewXeTnZj

Today, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice Shabana Mahmood addressed MoJ staff across the nation from our headquarters in London. She outlined her vision for the future of justice, including prison reform, driving down court backlogs, strengthening probation and tackling violence against women and girls. She also praised staff for their hard work across the department: ‘Whether you are working behind the scenes here, or somewhere else. Supporting and working in our criminal, family and civil courts and tribunals, or our prison, probation, vulnerable people and victims’ services. Thank you, for all that you have done.’

The UK's first secure school is a game-changer in youth custody. Research shows that smaller settings, quality education and healthcare are vital in rehabilitating young people in custody. At Oasis Restore Secure School, children will receive intensive academic support complemented by personalised mental health and healthcare services that address the root causes of offending. The country's first secure school is set to open. Minister Argar visited Oasis Restore Secure School to see how the ground-breaking youth justice approach will help young people in custody become law-abiding adults when it opens in the coming weeks. There are fewer children in custody than ever before, but many of these young people have complex needs and are more likely to reoffend. Oasis Restore Secure School aims to break that cycle. By prioritising education, healthcare, and mental health support, this innovative custodial facility aims to tackle the root causes of youth offending, guiding young people away from a life of crime. Thats a wrap! 🎁 Today we closed out our Australia programme with a day of events in Melbourne, giving us plenty of insights into the environment for legal tech in Victoria. Our delegates began with a conversation with Tanya Williams about how the UK government is supporting businesses to set up in the region, before a trip over to Invest Victoria for a enlightening presentation on the economic trends and picture at a state and federal level, and a panel discussion to cover entering the market and local legal tech ecosystem. Next up we travelled to Lander & Rogers for a discussion on the legal sector in Australia, their approach to legal tech innovation and what they look for in potential vendors, as well as their incubator hub programme. It was great to meet with Courtney Blackman and Simon Davidson and we're hugely grateful to them for sharing their knowledge and insight. We rounded off our programme with a networking session with local legal leaders, leading to more positive connections! Singer-songwriter Hak Baker’s story may have started in prison but it didn’t end there. He visited HMP Isis for a jam session with young offenders and shared how he turned his life around after taking guitar lessons in prison. This is Alhagie. Until he came to HMP Highpoint, he hadn't played rugby since he was a young boy at school. Flash forward to today, Alhagie has become a certified gym instructor while serving his sentence. He takes part in the Northampton Saints Foundation programme, which helps prisoners gain a recognised Gym Instructor qualification, all while helping him to stay focussed and keep a healthy routine. Being on the field and mentoring other rugby players stops him from worrying about the outside world and helps him foster meaningful relationships with his peers, a skill that he will benefit from after release. It’s important to move for our #MentalHealth, no matter where you’re starting from. #MomentsForMovement #rugby #exercise #training #HealthyHabits
