I'm pleased to say, Friday is setting the tone to follow into a positive week next week. Another job completed, and another happy customer. We’re pleased to have been able to conduct the first of a 3-year Annual Service Plan for this Daikin UK Altherma Monoblock 14kW air source heat pump. Twinned with an unvented 250L cylinder, this heat pump is connected to a full ground floor underfloor heating system plus a total of 8 radiators. Really interesting debate on Fabric First and Heat Pumps. As someone who has designed heat pumps that have been installed in uninsulated listed buildings with SCOP's over 3.5 and also someone who works as a Coordinator on large PAS20235 schemes where Fabric First is the regulation... the differences in opinion and need for a nuanced consensus is very obvious. Fabric First works but Heat Pumps also work in all buildings. There needs to be a middle ground that allows for both solutions. This podcast is really worth a listen. As are all of the Betatalk podcasts by Nathan Gambling. Some comments.. Fabric First is PAS regulation. We must follow it on all schemes. Installers are not installing heat pumps because they can't insulate the walls. This is an ongoing 'discussion' Dartmoor Energy constantly challenges. 'Heat Pumps are more efficient in efficient buildings'.. not true. There is industry wide confusion on what 'efficiency' means. Lower running costs and less energy used.. yes. More efficient... that depends on the design. 'Efficient' buildings can have very inefficient badly installed heat pump systems. 'Inefficient' buildings can have very efficient well installed heat pump systems. 'A database on retrofit work to buildings like a building passport.' This is the idea of the Trustmark Data Warehouse. It is being done. As long as it is lodged (must be if using Government funding). Fabric 5th? Fabric 1st? Fabric upgrades where possible.. definitely.. thermal bridge considerations.. DEFINITELY! No one speaks about the embodied carbon of insulation upgrades.. this isn't a data point anyone really looks at. An ongoing debate that needs everyone's attention...

Will we succeed? Can it work? What happens if it doesn’t work? These are some of the questions we’ve asked ourselves over the last two months! BUT ……. It’s all irrelevant! I'm in complete agreement with Mark Krull. Whilst in a transition stage across the Heating Industry, there is still a requirement for good all round heating engineers and will be for some time, espeically whilst gas boilers are continuing to be sold and installed which isnt going to stop for a little while just yet. There will then be the legacy that this all brings even at the point that Heat Pump installations take over from Gas Boilers. The up-skilling and cross skilling into Renewables should be the push and focus as opposed to as Mark rightly stated, a limiting Low Carbon apprenticeship. This could be a game changer for all Eco 4 installers with homes not suitable for a full heat pump, with the new legislation that has just came out a Hybrid heat pump with a boiler is now an acceptable measure on Eco 4. Please see the relevant part of the new legislation below.⬇️ 5.149. Hydronic heat pumps are a renewable heating source and can be delivered in all on-gas and off-gas premises, replacing any heating measure except where it is replacing a heating system of the same kind. 5.150. This includes the installation of a heat pump as an upgrade measure (listed as B_upgrade measure type in the PPS matrix) in properties with an existing working efficient heating system. For example, if it results in a heating cost saving, then a working condensing boiler could be upgraded to a hydronic heat pump. 5.151. A hybrid heat pump refers to a manufacturer-designed, integrated heat source that consists of a heat pump and a boiler. Integrated ASHP/gas boiler hybrid heat sources may be delivered through ECO in on-gas premises. An ASHP/gas boiler hybrid heat pump is considered to be a renewable heating measure. 5.152. It is permissible to install a heat pump alongside an existing boiler, either creating a bivalent heating system or retaining the existing boiler solely for hot water. This would be notified as an Air to water ASHP or GSHP measure as relevant. Note that scores will be lower as the post-retrofit RdSAP assessment will take account of the retained boiler. See 6.113 for advice on partial project scores.
