Not every communications plan is right for laughter, but humor is an underdeveloped and underutilized area in our sector with proven medical and scientific benefits both to human health and communications. Laughter brings us together, diffuses awkward situations, and helps us manage our emotions. Humor also has substantial and surprising health benefits - from improving our mental health, to regulating our central nervous systems, to reducing pain to even preventing heart disease. So, if humor is so good for our health, why don’t we see it show up in health communications? Are communicators missing an opportunity to reach their audiences? And if so, how and when should they bring it into their comms without alienating their audiences? Our Leith colleagues have put together an eight-part podcast series exploring the links between laughter, health, and medical communications, hosted by Leith and award-winning comedian Ria Lina (Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You, and Mock The Week) that brings together a unique panel of neuroscientists, patients, creatives, and health care providers (HCPs) to discuss these topics. Check out this clip from episode two, featuring our own Susan Daniels, Vice President, Patient Strategy & Engagement at Lumanity, sharing her personal experiences. Discussions in the industry are progressing from ‘why’ to ‘how’ to ‘now’ when involving patients in clinical research design. Our experts have identified some key themes that emerged from both the US and European Patients as Partners in Clinical Research conferences, that took place in March and May respectively. Some of these trends and themes include: - More consistent and earlier approach to patient focused drug development (PFDD) - Equitable access to research including health literacy and diversity, equity and inclusion - Measuring impact of patient engagement in research - Improving the sponsor, site and study participant partnership - Participant data release in clinical trials - Compensation for study participants Read the full report to access our key themes and reflections at https://buff.ly/3XPY7uj #PatientsasPartners #ClinicalResearch #PFDD #patientengagement #medcomms #healthliteracy #patients

Some great thoughts and takeaways from the EPHMRA conference this week. Thank you for sharing, Damian Eade!
Great couple of days at #EphMRA in a hot and sunny London. Lots of interesting and inspiring papers to get the mind ticking over, with a particular focus on #AI (surprise, surprise), #segmentation and #personas, #omnichannel and #patientengagement. A few of my top takeaways: 🤩 The growing recognition and potential role of online influencers – from the professional breed via Daniel Ghinn to active engagement of patient DOLs with Paul Reed – with very interesting ideas on how they can enhance our research work, and the importance of those micro and nano types in healthcare 🔍 More patient DOL engagement from Esme Barrow-Williams and Millie Morgan who shared an interesting case study of SML in cancer – fascinating to see their analysis through linguistic and behavioural science lens to dig deeper here particularly liked the sentiment of “a problem shared is a problem halved 1,000 times” when it comes to social 🛣 Another great case study came from Gregg Quy and Mohamed Akrout who shared their multi-method approach to map the lupus patient pathway, and how they got their patient personas a ‘seat at the table’ with a plethora of beautiful and impactful outcomes, from a magazine to a graphic novel 🛠 We saw Elena Brutto (ex. Geatches) and Tasleem Rehmatullah remind us that doctors are people too – with the wonderful idea of having doctors role play as patients, which sounded super powerful stuff 🛑 On a more personal level, perhaps the most resonant advice of the conference came from James Pickles who shared his story about the ‘Hidden Cost of Saying Yes’ – with a stark, cautionary tale combined with some wonderfully practical tips and tools to take away! 🏋♂️ And of course, special mention has to go to anthony rowbottom for his highly moving and personal insight into his journey with DLBCL – had me choked from slide one with his emotive, brave and inspiring talk – absolutely captivated! 🤖 Thanks to EPHMRA for the chance to share our paper with myself and Maria Eletskaya talking about our AI pilot study to bring patient segments to life for use as synthetic stimulus – thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to jump around on stage and share my inner geekdom! 🌟 A cracking couple of days overall – big thanks to Bernadette Rogers and the whole EPHMRA team – looking forward to the next one!
