Could be I missed some Japanese references. In any case, I get irritated with overly apathetic protagonists. Everyone names something. Kippy could have assumed more importance in the ending - Breakfast at Tiffany's style? No I guess not, but if you're gonna go fantasy make it awesome fantasy, if you're gonna go philosophy, show a little persistence, otherwise, give me some good story and rich characters. And if you really know your stuff, you should be able to swing all three together....more

Yes, it's funny, but the main treasure is Enright's intelligence. From the first essay about the eeriness of pregnancy, I knew that this is a good writer with a baby, rather than a exhibitionist mother with a laptop. I read this a while ago, but still remember vividly that first Aliens essay, along with the essays on crying, on memories, and baby carriage directed scorn. Oh and on messes, including the Ding an sich, poop! Heh I could easily read this again....more
