I grew up on a farm. There were no "boy" or "girl" jobs. There were just jobs. Everyone with able hands pitched in. We had to work together to be able to accomplish what needed to be done. Robotics integration is the same. There are no certain jobs for certain people. Every single individual brings a skill set unique to them. We have different ideas, strengths, and experiences to draw from. Diversity adds depth and dimension of perspective and that translates to better solutions for customers and more successful projects. Remember the old Captain Planet cartoon saying, "By your powers combined..."? That's how I feel whenever we start a project. It takes the contributions of everyone on the team to get the job done and done well.

I have stories where Teamwork failed because leadership didn't understand the opportunity. But I have one story from early in my business that has blossomed into a town rallying around robot, machine and material handling safety. I was called in for a training where Engineering, Maintenance, EHS and Management were present. I started to explain the basics of the risk assessment process for the group and it wasn't long before I just let the conversation take it's own direction. I found out this all began with an injury to a young lady who was getting married in a few weeks. The meeting I had the pleasure and honor of presiding over was the beginning of a culture change. That change led to many benefits with everyone pulling together.

Robotics is incredibly multidisciplinary. When we started recruiting the initial team for building our humanoid robot, we made sure to have the best and most experienced people as leaders. But it was equally important to include individuals who were proficient in their specific domains. It's a mistake to have too many of the same type of people. We have people focusing on research, software, hardware, and electrical work. Proper teams were created in advance, allowing them to work within their specializations and collaborate with other teams when necessary. Having skilled individuals from various disciplines and respecting each group's expertise is crucial for working together harmoniously to build our robot.

Consider using the risk assessment process for robot applications as a tool for diversity, communications, Teamwork and more. Tasks and their associated hazards do not discriminate when it comes to getting injured. A number of the contributors see the collaboration, innovation, ROI and more. But I have seen life long relationships filled with pride and motivation result from what started as generating a safe environment around robots systems.
