One must learn about the robotics customer's industry, challenges and goals, so lifelong learning is important. Related to robotics customers often are challenged to differentiate between "needs" and "wants". Learning the customer's challenges is an important step. When I work with EV manufacturers I need to understand the components and assemnly processes of Li Ion batteries. When working with HDD manufacturing I needed to learn about HSAs and read-write heads. I had to be flexible about learning and learn quickly with the success of multimillion dollar hanging in the balance.

At this time, it is important to be developing prompt skills for interacting with LLMs like Claude, Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT, DALLE, Pi, etc. How one structures a prompt determines the usefulness and validity of the "AI" answer or advice. Getting advice to put glue on pizza is the fault of the prompt and not the LLM. LLM based programming has already started to encroach in robotics through machine vision and bin picking modules. Using LLMs in one's spare time is a great way to better understand the capabilities of this technology. Prompt development should become second nature to a robotics executive, just like using tables in spreadsheets.

It is useful to take on DYI personal projects that are system based like using Rasberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetpack to connect to vision and voice to greet guests or a Lego based robot with your kids. Robotics are systems and most engineers start in one discipline like software or mechanical engineering then interact with other disciplines not understanding how the convergence of technologies makes robotics work. It helps us as managers to better manage teams of individual with different backgrounds and different knowledge systems and get them to work together in harmony.
