Power markets in Europe are seeing an odd phenomenon: prices are continuously falling below zero. A record share of clean electricity has flooded the grid, and at times, supply is greatly exceeding demand. Many consumers are benefiting from shifting energy use to times of oversupply, but the situation has investors thinking twice about how much more renewable power they can build before returns start to suffer. The solution - build more batteries. Subzero price growth isn’t projected to slow down until the middle of the 2030s. By then, Europe will need enough energy storage capacity to manage intermittency and have a significant effect on prices. As power systems rapidly become more complex, the energy sector is taking early steps to harness the power of AI to boost efficiency and accelerate innovation. AI can enhance predictive maintenance, where the performance of energy assets is continuously monitored and analyzed to identify potential faults ahead of time. Meanwhile, machine learning can help match variable supply with rising and falling demand, which maximizes the financial value of renewable energy and allows it to be integrated more easily into the grid. Australia is experiencing 10,000 fires in its waste system a year due to improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries. “If we don’t act on this, we’re going to continue to see facilities and trucks burn, we’re going to end up potentially with genuine injuries or significant injuries on our workers, and, dare I say, a death, which is what we’re trying to avoid,” said Gayle Sloan, Chief Executive of Australia's Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association. “We’re not going to find people having their materials and rubbish collected when they want it to, because the services will become unaffordable.” Read more via Interesting Engineering: https://lnkd.in/eGN9Bixz #batterysafety #batteryfire #lithiumion #batterytechnology

Data centers and renewable energy technologies are poised to have a mutually beneficial relationship, according to a note by Morgan Stanley. "While generative AI’s need for power could contribute to global carbon emissions, the technology itself could drive long-term sustainability benefits through power grid optimization, more precise weather forecasting, and improving carbon capture and storage technologies." These outcomes would in turn, make renewable energy technologies more effective in delivering robust, stable power around the globe.
