🎉Congratulations to Plant Vogtle and our partners at Georgia Power Company and Southern Nuclear for being named POWER magazine's Plant of the Year!🎉 Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4 made history this year by bringing clean, carbon-free, nuclear power to the grid—today, helping power 500,000+ homes and businesses across Georgia. #Bechtel, joining the project in 2017, completed the construction of both units, representing the first successful start-to-finish construction of a new nuclear plant in the U.S. in over 30 years. #Bechtel chairman and CEO Brendan Bechtel shared insights on the future of nuclear power: "Plant Vogtle is already moving us in the right direction. It's an exciting time for our Bechtel team in California. We were selected by the Santa Clara VTA to provide construction management services for the next phase of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system's Silicon Valley extension—connecting residents of North San Jose and Santa Clara to the Bay Area's iconic transportation system.   BART holds a special significance for Bechtel. We helped lead the design and construction of the original BART system in 1962. You can see in these photos how proud my grandfather, Steve Bechtel Jr., and the team were when they celebrated the completion of the 3.6-mile-long "Transbay Tube" between San Francisco and Oakland in 1969—considered an amazing feat at the time.   Fast forward nearly 60 years, our team remains incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to build on this progress and connect even more communities across California. We're proud to be back on site with our partners at the VTA to help deliver the next phase of this iconic transportation system. Congratulations, team. To wrap up #NationalSafetyMonth this June, we're reflecting on our new partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) we launched earlier this year to address a critical safety issue—protecting our colleagues' mental health. Today, the U.S. construction industry faces a tragic reality—having one of the highest suicide rates of any occupation. In fact, the number of lives lost to suicide in the industry is nearly 5x higher than the number of lives lost in jobsite safety incidents. These are safety statistics that together, we must change. Our multiyear partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is an effort to do just that. To start, our goal is to reach more than 500,000 U.S. construction workers over the next five years by developing industry-specific suicide prevention programs and resources. 📣 ICYMI: Earlier this month, members of #Bechtel's Mining and Metals team travelled to Antofagasta, Chile, to attend #Exponor2024, one of Latin America's most important conferences for the mining industry.   Our #Bechtel colleagues presented at the “Talento Mujer” stage (which translates to "female talent" in English), which was dedicated to highlighting the important role women play in the mining sector and promoting gender equality across the industry... "It was an excellent experience to have this instance where women can participate and present on topics like mental health care, with plans that can improve performance, safety results, and the well-being of people in the context of construction in mining," said Pamela Carrasco Vallejos, Health, Safety and Environment specialist at Bechtel, who together with her #Bechtel colleague Sebastian Navea Weishaupt, led a talk on mental health, a crucial topic in challenging work environments like mining.   At Bechtel, diversity and inclusion are fundamental pillars of our culture. Earlier this week, our #Bechtel team at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico wrapped up construction on its new, state-of-the-art Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation (SSCVS) facility, which is key in supporting WIPP's operational infrastructure. Congratulations to our team and partners at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)! 👏 How it works: Once fully online, the SSCVS will increase the quality of airflow to the underground repository at WIPP, as well as allow air to safely exit, further enabling the plant to deliver on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s national security and environmental cleanup missions. Celebrating 25 years of operations this year, WIPP is a first-of-a-kind facility designed to safely and permanently dispose of radioactive transuranic defense waste. It's also the United States' only deep geological repository. #Bechtel played a significant role in WIPP's initial design and development back in the 1970s, and today, we’re honored to help carry out this important mission. We were at #GigaUSA this week, delving into the world of batteries and sharing our insights on engineering, procurement, and construction within the sector. 👋 Hello, Adelaide, Australia!   We are excited to share that we've expanded our Australian footprint with the opening of a new Bechtel office in Adelaide this week! This new office in South Australia is a testament to Bechtel's continued commitment to supporting the state's ongoing mining, defense, and infrastructure developments. Australia State Minister for Trade & Investment, Local Government, and Veterans Affairs, Joe Szakacs, joined industry leaders to officially open the new office. This year, Bechtel celebrates 70 years in Australia.🎉 Since 1954, Bechtel has helped our customers across the region deliver inspiring projects, including pipelines and oil projects in the '50s and '60s, and the expansion of Australia's copper, iron, and aluminum commodities in the '70s, which includes South Australia's Olympic Dam mining projects. And more recently, Bechtel's portfolio has continued to broaden, particularly with the rise of LNG and rail and airport infrastructure projects across the country. We have maintained long-term offices in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to support these projects and others across the country – and now, we are excited to add Adelaide to the list.
