NATIVE CULTURES FUND Initiated and led by Northern California Native leaders in the 1990s, the Native Cultures Fund is a partnership between Native communities, HAF+WRCF, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and other donors. The mission of the NCF is to support California culture bearers, artists, lifeways and knowledge transmission in our four-county region. It has done so by supporting more than 400 artists, culture bearers, and tribal researchers, granting more than $3 million to Native communities and individuals. The grants are used for the preservation, revitalization, and perpetuation of the rich indigenous cultures in our service region since 2002. How it works: All grant and scholarship decisions are made by committees of Native culture bearers, scholars, and elders from across our regions, with committees changing each fall and spring. To engage in reciprocity, our process is to invite past grantees back to sit on review committees. In addition, we look to cultural leaders to help provide guidance and leadership in developing ongoing strategies and priorities for the fund. NCF provides grants to Native communities and individuals, often serving as a first gateway into philanthropy for our grantees. NCF works to bolster the field of philanthropy, increasing the capacity of national and statewide philanthropic partners to better serve Native peoples through education, advocacy, collaborative funding, and coaching. Concurrently, we offer services to Native organizations and communities through one-on-one consulting, grant-writing assistance, and networking opportunities. In partnership with community leaders, we create and sustain programming that offers culture bearers, language revivalists, and Native educators the space to build community, share best practices, and strengthen the cultural renaissance in California. NCF also creates programs to promote widespread understanding of Native cultures and history. Stanislaus Community Foundation (SCF) has selected four local nonprofit leaders to receive sabbatical awards through Project REST, a new program offered through the Porges Nonprofit Excellence Initiative. This program recognizes the dedication and achievements of these leaders, providing them with the opportunity to reflect, recharge, and return to their organizations with renewed energy. Each leader will embark on a two-month sabbatical, fully funded by the Porges Family Foundation. In addition to the cash grant to their organization, awardees will receive 1:1 coaching and support throughout their sabbatical period. Congratulations to Kimberlie Gamino of Camp Taylor, Marvin Jacobo of City Ministry Network, Steve Ashman of CASA of Stanislaus County, and Susan Mendieta Beasley of Parent Resource Center! Thank you Assemblymember Dawn Addis for the honor of being recognized by you and your team as Nonprofit of the Year for our work supporting Santa Cruz County during the winter storms and floods of 2023. It is this community's extraordinary generosity that enables us to do our work and it powered every aspect of this disaster response. Overall, we issued $3.5 million in storm and flood response grants to help from Pajaro to the San Lorenzo Valley. This includes $1.3 million in funding to nonprofits offering assistance to residents affected by the Pajaro flood. Neighbors helping neighbors. That's what we do here in Santa Cruz County. 💗 📷 Kevin Heuer, Director of Engagement and Impact for CFSCC & Diego Amaro, AD 30 Capitol Staff Member

Our partners at Humboldt Area Foundation just launched the first-of-its-kind Klamath River Fund! The fund, which launches with over $10 million, will support local efforts to restore the landscape and communities around the Klamath River. We’re proud to support this work bringing Tribal and rural communities together to lead and shape the region’s future. Our Andrea Keller Helsel said, “It’s a new model for how philanthropy can be a partner in the longer-term work of healing nature and communities. Dam removal was only the first step; now we will see the transformations that are possible when Tribal and rural communities are resourced to come together and co-create a new vision for the region.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gsE9p8-n

Many nonprofits and community organizations are operating in survival mode. It’s challenging to serve the community when you struggle to make payroll and keep the lights on. It provides little to no space for healing. The underlying foundation for EBCF’s work is to change the economic conditions in the East Bay so that everyone can thrive. Through the Bay Area Power Building Funders Table and our ASCEND BLO wellness grants, we are leveraging our financial resources and position to help realize this future. Read more from EBCF President, Brandi Howard, on the importance of centering healing in our work. https://lnkd.in/e79AVWJ7
