📣 Isometric has released a new protocol for carbon removal via Subsurface Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage. The protocol has now entered public consultation, and feedback is welcome from buyers, suppliers, and scientists until August 9.
Isometric has released a protocol for durable carbon removal through Subsurface Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage for public consultation. Storage of biomass in the subsurface falls within the broader category of Biomass Carbon Removal and Storage (BiCRS), which is a promising pathway for advancing carbon removal. The protocol outlines a methodology for calculating durable subsurface storage of biomass for 1,000 years. This requires characterizing the minimum detection limit of testing, using this limit to conservatively estimate the durable carbon stored on that same time scale and rigorous requirements for ensuring storage sites are protected and undisturbed. Projects or processes must also utilize agricultural or forestry residues as eligible feedstocks in accordance with Isometric's Biomass Feedstock Accounting Module. Carbon removal supplier Graphyte provided feedback during the development of this protocol. Comments are welcome from interested buyers, suppliers and scientists. This brings Isometric’s total number of protocols to eight.

I owe an explanation of my next steps after resigning from South Pole, NextGen CDR and the CCS+ initiative+. Besides setting up shop as an independent consultant, supporting carbon management and climate tech leaders to accelerate climate action (reach out in case of interest), I’m starting as an Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the Carbon Business Council. It goes without saying that I am super excited to be working with Ben Rubin on building something new, exploring what the needs of startups and other market players are for a more robust advisory service. Our ambition is to develop new mechanisms and services that will benefit the climate tech ecosystem and help realize public goods to exponentially scale climate impact. Watch this space!

The Carbon Business Council recently responded to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the Greenhouse Gas Technical Assistance Provider and Third-Party Verifier Program. 💡 We highlighted the importance of including high-integrity carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches in the program. Ensuring funding eligibility for methods like Biochar Carbon Removal, Enhanced Weathering, Reforestation, Microbial Carbon Mineralization, Soil Carbon, and Terrestrial Storage of Biomass is crucial for advancing climate-smart agricultural and forestry practices. 🤝 Additionally, we recommended USDA coordination with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to align standards for monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of CDR. A unified approach is vital to maintain coherence and avoid a complex patchwork of regulations. 📈 As the CDR sector evolves rapidly, we encouraged USDA to structure the Program to accommodate new protocols regularly, ensuring continuous innovation benefits U.S. farmers, ranchers, and foresters. The letter featured methodologies from Andes, Climate Action Reserve Isometric, Nori, Puro.earth, and Verra. Full details and additional context can be found here: https://bit.ly/3VHdv9L
