Katie Somers, CVH Physical Therapist, Crosses Finish Line at 128th Boston Marathon Inspiring Others to Try Challenging Feats After a winter of training in Carson Valley and the Sierra Nevada snow, Rehabilitation PT Katie Somers raced across the finish line at the 2024 Boston Marathon. Marathons are 26 miles and 385 yards, and this one winds its way through eight towns. The Boston Marathon is the most famous marathon in the world, and Katie qualified to participate as one of the estimated 29,451 runners. Her 5.5 months of training included running six (6) days a week with speed and hill repeats, distance runs, strength training, cycling, and cross training. Katie was running about 38-56 miles a week. She laughs and says she is now “glad to be done with 5:30 am workouts…that was exhausting! It was a lot to run in the mornings before starting my workday at the hospital.” Katie ran in the 18–34-year age group and finished with a time of 3:11, 13 minutes faster than her time in the previous qualifying marathon. Katie achieved her goal of running the marathon without injury and ended near 4,800th place. “I felt really good, considering I started near the middle of the pack. I think training at high altitude helped a lot, and I never felt like my breathing got tired. I felt like I ran the race well,” said Katie. Three years ago, Katie began working at Carson Valley Health Rehabilitation Center. “It was such a special experience being supported by everyone, especially all the people in the Rehab Center. They even put the Boston Marathon on the TVs in the facility to cheer me on,” said Katie. Katie has come a long way since running her first marathon at 18 years old, when after five hours and a chronic injury she concluded that her body “wasn’t made for distance running” and ultimately gave up on marathons for a decade. After crossing the line at the Boston Marathon, Katie proves to be a stellar example of perseverance and dedication. “I hope this article inspires readers to try something that appropriately challenges their bodies because they may surprise themselves with what they can do.” Read more at CVH Spotlight: https://lnkd.in/gKcJRjvn.

Congratulations to Melissa Frager, RN for earning the 2024 Summer DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing at Carson Valley Health. Melissa was one of several nominations by patients and colleagues, and the story of her compassion rose to the top. Melissa Frager, RN has worked as a nurse for 10 years and has been with CVH for the last eight. As an accident-prone youth, she spent time in and out of hospitals, and enjoyed the hospital atmosphere. She entered healthcare to give back. Melissa said of winning the DAISY award “It’s nice to know that what I do makes a difference in a patient’s life, instead of working and not knowing the outcome of the patient.” She hopes to continue to make a difference in healthcare, perhaps by teaching nursing students. Nurse Melissa was nominated by Lisa Filbin, who brought her 85-year-old mother to the emergency room from her memory care facility last Christmas. After thorough testing, providers realized her mom had congestive heart failure. “Melissa was amazing, sweet, kind and realistic. She did everything she could to run tests and support our family who were all home to celebrate Christmas together.” A lifetime in Carson Valley means Melissa has many community ties, including to Lisa. Lisa has cared for Melissa’s young children. Emergency Department Manager Monica Green says of Melissa “she is a natural leader in the unit. Currently she is helping us achieve our American Heart Association certification. She is fair and compassionate to her patients, even when she’s busy and the ER is stressful. I’m proud of her, and excited for her DAISY award win.” Ms. Filbin summed up her experience with this to say “CVH has an amazing staff, sweet and knowledgeable and supportive. And to have this available in town so we don’t have to go somewhere else. You can feel comfortable and confident bringing your family or yourself and know you’ll get the best care. You guys are doing a great job.” From the DAISY Foundation website “The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of the autoimmune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award® is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for the compassionate contributions they make every day going above and beyond expectations in science and sensitivity.” The DAISY Foundation

When you support the Carson Valley Health Foundation, you have the chance to make a difference for patients and families during their toughest times. Sean, from the CVH Radiology department, shares that this drives his reason for giving. I GIVE BECAUSE... "One of my foundational principles in my profession is patient centered care. In the medical field, you will likely never encounter a patient or meet a family member having the best day of their life. Giving back to the CVH Foundation gives me another opportunity to help our patients and the surrounding community." Sean Driscoll CVH Radiology Tech & Technical Supervisor

Imaging and Radiology team members had the chance for a behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital expansion. We were excited to watch the unboxing of the first piece of equipment to be installed - the Nuclear Medicine/CT! Here is the team, standing in front of the new Emergency Room entrance (still under construction) - soon to be at the south east side of the new building. Just past the Rehabilitation and Outpatient Therapy Center. Learn more about the expansion at https://lnkd.in/g65Jisuw
