Newly-released Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show that more than 70 million Americans—or one in four adults—reported having a disability in 2022. These data reinforce that people with disabilities are a large part of every community and population. Disability inclusion is beneficial for all and an important part of a comprehensive approach to public health. You can get safely swept up in the destructive fury of tornados in movies like #Twisters, but in the real-life aftermath of a dangerous storm, it’s the power of public health that helps communities with the physical and mental damage left behind. After tornados hit the Omaha, Nebraska area this spring, CDC Foundation Data Survey Engineer Andrew Delicata helped prepare a public health and safety survey for volunteers to use in the field. They asked residents what warnings they heard, what damage was sustained and what kind of assistance they needed, including emotional support. These “rapid needs assessment” surveys allow local public health departments to better respond to emergencies and prepare their community for the next disaster.
