🌎 Making Climate Science Actionable: Monetizing Risk and Resilience for HRSD: https://bit.ly/468yOpF 💧 HRSD and CDM Smith's team of climate resilience experts established a roadmap for the future of HRSD's wastewater infrastructure by analyzing the impacts of the changing climate on 136 facilities. 🌊 "We delivered a leading-edge approach to flood resilience and climate change planning that is adaptable for HRSD and other utilities," says Dr.-Ing. Matthias Wittenberg, PE, PMP, BC.WRE, REM, project manager. HRSD is responsible for over 150 aboveground facilities that collect, convey, and treat wastewater, most of which are critical to maintaining HRSD’s mission to protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads by treating wastewater effectively. 👫 HRSD provides the regional backbone for the locality sanitary sewer systems that serve nearly 2 million people in 20 cities and counties, and HRSD itself operates more than 500 miles of pipe. Learn how climate resilience practice leader Lauren Miller, CC-P and her team evaluated the at-risk facilities using the latest climate science: https://bit.ly/468yOpF

🎉 One of our most exciting projects was featured in the ASHE National Scanner magazine this month! PennDOT's I-95 Section BS1 Project was recently recognized as the ASHE Delaware Valley Section Project of the Year. https://lnkd.in/emjz3PPb 🛣️ Part of PennDOT's larger I-95 Infrastructure Improvement Program, Section BS1 was a major reconstruction effort beginning in 2019. Key improvements included two bridges and five retaining walls, as well as several local streets and a modernized stormwater network. Technical creativity and innovation allowed this project to reduce over 10 acres of stormwater runoff to the City’s combined sewer system and improved stormwater treatment percentages in the project area. 🚧 As the prime consultant and lead designer, CDM Smith demonstrated unwavering commitment to PennDOT’s needs and the interests of stakeholders throughout this project. A true team effort, this project goes beyond merely rebuilding an interstate; it's about maintaining and enhancing local infrastructure so travelers can benefit for years to come. Learn more about our work revitalizing Pennsylvania’s heaviest-traveled interstate route here: https://lnkd.in/eYaT_p-X

⚡ Microgrids are paving the way for more resilient local communities while advancing the nation’s energy system, according to Matthew Goss, PE, PMP, CEM, CEA, CDSM, LEED AP. The #microgrid model represents a network of diverse power sources that serve a neighborhood, campus or community. Microgrids harness the power of local resources, utilizing a range of fuels for efficient energy distribution. Communities blessed with abundant sunlight and strong winds, for instance, can integrate solar panels and wind turbines into their microgrid. Additionally, the use of wastewater treatment, biomass, waste-to-energy, and landfill operations can generate both heat and power, contributing to the community's energy independence and sustainability. These systems have been widely implemented throughout Europe and are gaining traction elsewhere around the world. U.S. communities have been slower to adopt the microgrid concept, mainly due to readily available low-cost energy sources in the U.S., such as natural gas and electricity. "We must not let these short-term challenges prevent U.S. municipalities from benefitting from microgrid systems," Matt says. See microgrids in your future? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eZQ_FT3w
