Dynocardia, Inc. has taken a leap forward in wearable health tech with the help of PracticePoint's state-of-the-art Motion Capture Suite and expert staff. Mohan Thanikachalam, research assistant professor of public health & community medicine, is one of six Tufts faculty members to be recognized as senior members of the National Academy of Inventors for innovations that have made, or aspire to make, a positive impact on society. Thanikachalam is currently the lead investigator at Tufts University for the PURSE-HIS Study, a population-based cross-sectional study in 8,042 South Asians. The study aims to assess the prevalence and cause of overt and sub-clinical endovascular disease in urban, semi-urban, and rural communities in India. Thanikachalam previously established a new healthcare delivery model for comprehensive, cost-effective diabetes and cardiac care in India, and a biomedical engineering research facility to develop a range of implantable cardiac devices, including a patented implantable intraventricular assist device currently being commercialized. Thanikachalam also led a joint effort between Tufts and MIT to develop the ViTrack®, a first-of-its-kind, cuff-less, wearable technology for real-world continuous, non-invasive blood pressure and other advanced hemodynamic parameters. The technology was awarded the Breakthrough Innovation in Cardiovascular Digital Health HRX 2023 by the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology Innovation Award in 2023. The technology is expected to be available in the market by 2025. He also led the development of a mobile phone-enabled peripheral neuropathy analyzer for persons with diabetes, and led efforts to develop a patch ultrasound sensor as a point-of-care device for home monitoring of extra-vascular lung water for remote management of congestive heart failure. Thanikachalam's research has been supported by various institutes of the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

And that’s a wrap for DeviceTalks Boston – An electric panel discussion with Steve Levine, David Hoganson, Ellen Roche, and Mohan Thanikachalam focusing on the entire life cycle of #InSilicoClinicalTrials : the current state of the art, challenges, and the future tapping into our perspective as researchers in academia, industry, and medical practitioners. Some key takeaways: - #GenerativeAI models can democratize access to clinical trial insights (Medidata Solutions Dassault Systèmes #Simulants), enabling improved trial success by informing every single stage of the clinical trial development process. Some examples include: trial design, Optimal patient population selection, I/E criteria, site selection for optimized enrollment and diversity metrics, enrollment rate/patient dropout prediction, and adverse event mitigation strategies. - #VirtualTwins generation can be accelerated by augmenting costly physics-based virtual twins with synthetic patient population generated using AI models that preserve the fidelity of the physics-based Virtual Twin population while being faster and computationally cheaper to run. - Advances in AI and simulations have the potential to reduce time to simulation of digital twins by several fold – delivering digital twins for surgical planning in a few hours as compared to weeks with the potential to reduce even further (See Dr. Hoganson’s work at BCH) - Though using surrogate AI models in conjunction or as alternatives to physics-based models has the potential to accelerate pipelines to virtual twin generation, it is essential to keep validation in the loop to keep these virtual twins grounded in reality– minimizing risk of developing inaccurate digital twins. This is extremely crucial specifically in pediatric surgery where significant errors cannot be tolerated. - We can utilize recent advancements in AI to enable and accelerate in silico clinical trial development, with the potential to simulate treatment outcomes 100,000 times before the medical intervention is introduced to patients, capturing uncertainty in treatment outcomes. “All models are wrong, but some models are useful.”- As long we continue building models that are informative, we continue to work towards a better prior- resulting in better, safer and improved clinical trials. 1. I'm happy to share that this past weekend I graduated from Boston University with a degree in Biomedical Engineering, concentrating in Machine Learning. I'm also excited to announce that I will be starting my journey as a Biomedical Engineer at Dynocardia, Inc. this June. I am happy to share that I have successfully defended my thesis today! I would really like to thank my advisors Marvin Doyley and Farran Briggs. It has been an amazing 6-year journey. All the hard work and all those overnight experiments have become valuable resources and experiences for rest of my life.
