The ECS - The Electrochemical Society has named Rana Mohtadi, PhD, a senior principal scientist at the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), a Fellow in its Class of 2024. Dr. Mohtadi is the first female from an automotive OEM to receive the honor. The Fellow designation, established by ECS in 1989, recognizes individual contributions in electrochemical and solid-state science and technology. Out of the 400 ECS fellows, Dr. Mohtadi joins a distinguished list of about 40 women. "The ECS has been my home society since I was a graduate student where I looked up to the ECS Fellows as role models," Dr. Mohtadi said. "I am deeply honored to receive this recognition and join other fellow scientists." Her work designing high-value materials for chemical and electrochemical energy storage technologies has set a new trend in electrolyte research in multivalent batteries. "The liquid and solid-state electrolyte materials she developed for mono and multivalent beyond Li-ion batteries were subject of handovers for consideration in practical applications," ECS and TRINA wrote in a joint press release. "Additionally, she has pursued sustainable batteries through chemistries thought to have less environmental impact and developed hydrogen storage materials with fuel cells." Dr. Mohtadi is a Principal Investigator for the Advanced Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University in Japan. She received a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina and holds 36 patents.

I'm excited to share our latest article on the application of alloy materials as negative electrodes in sodium-ion batteries, published in the journal of ECS - The Electrochemical Society. The energy density contribution of the negative electrodes in commercial sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) is limited by the use of hard carbon. In this study, we have shown that stable, reversible cycling with high energy density and excellent performance can be attained in SIBs using Pb, Sn, and P anodes, taking into account cost, performance, ease of handling, and material processing. While more research needs to be carried out to resolve the volume expansion issues associated with these materials, it is interesting to note that these materials are viable options to be considered as anode materials in SIBs. Credit for this work goes to my co-authors— Matthew Garayt, Libin Z., Yixiang Zhang, Jay Deshmukh, and Yingjie Xing—whose exceptional contributions were vital to the completion of this study. Special thanks to my supervisors, Drs. Michael Metzger and jeff dahn, for their excellent feedback, guidance, and support throughout the project's development. Lead in batteries; that's old news, right? What about lead in a sodium-ion battery? Read our latest open access publication in the journal of ECS - The Electrochemical Society to find out how lead, phosphorus, and tin can replace hard carbon as the negative electrode to significantly boost the energy density of sodium-ion batteries. I must thank all of my co-authors without which this paper would not exist. This was a collaboration with Libin Zhang, Yixiang Zhang, and Martins Obialor with valuable input from Jay Deshmukh on how various sodium-alloying elements can work better than expected in sodium-ion half cells. Jeff Dahn conceived the idea to work on lead, Michael Metzger provided excellent feedback and oversight on the research, and Yingjie Xing gave support from our industrial partner's side. Research like this into low-cost, abundant energy storage is necessary to reach our decarbonization goals. https://lnkd.in/emgB_Ad5
