On Tuesday 6/11, the USDA hosted the Agrifood Innovation Symposium in partnership with the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research. The symposium: “Harvesting Hope: Cultivating Scientific Solutions that Nourish People & Planet" was held near the Capitol Mall in DC at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. In this photo, Steve Brown, AIFS Associate Director, describes the AIFS co-sponsored Farm Robotics Challenge to Davida Vanderpuye Tengey, USDA International Engagement Manager. This Farm-ng robot has been configured by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) to recognize and precision spray weeds.

Day 5 of Immersion Week of the Fresh Field Catalyst. We got out of the heat (somewhat) by going to Grimmway Farms fields in the Tehachapi mountains. Beautiful, clean, high yielding organic fields. Followed by a visit to Sun World where we ate more delious fruit than you can imagine and learned about their breeding programs And a picture of happy me being in the field and loving our industry. This was a moment!! During our Immersion Tour, we visited a field with Taylor Farms where I learned about Parabug, a technology that releases beneficial insects into organic fields. Back in the late ‘70s as an undergraduate at NMSU, I worked on discovering parasitic Hymenoptera in alfalfa and cotton fields in New Mexico. Our aim was to catalog the existing species and promote the use of fewer/different/no crop protection products - a journey that began 45 years ago! Witnessing the confluence of technologies like rearing beneficial insects, data collection, analytics, and drone technology was truly exciting. The progress made over the years is remarkable, showcasing how technology has evolved to accelerate processes while emphasizing the importance of not dismissing technologies that may not have immediate applications. Amazing first day of the Fresh Field Catslyst accelerator from IFPA. We started with our 12 company cohort at Emerald Packaging, Inc. Packaging is on everyone’s mind today and we have to work to continue to support the industry to delivery fresh produce that is safe and protected. The second visit was Driscoll's R&D center. Matthew Hoffman and the R&D team gave us an incredible overview on how Driscoll’s engages with technology companies to solve our biggest industry challenges.
