Our animal nutrition manager, Phyllis Pietrucha-May celebrated 40 years of working at Houston Zoo this month! She moved here from Chicago in 1980 and started as a Zoo volunteer in 1982. One of her favorite memories is working in the Herpetology department in the 80’s and being the first Houston Toad intern. Get to know more about Phyllis in our Q&A with her: bit.ly/4cEX6cz

❌MYTH: Zoos don’t help animals and are tourist traps ✅TRUTH: Zoos are CRITICAL to wildlife conservation Zoos and Aquariums ACCREDITED by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) have been integral in PROTECTING threatened and endangered wildlife, collecting valuable RESEARCH about animal behavior that forms conservation efforts, and EDUCATING us on what we can do to ensure these animals can thrive in their natural habitats. 💲 In 2022 alone, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums collectively spent $300 MILLION on conservation efforts and contributed $24 BILLION in economic growth to their local communities 💪 Check out these 4 #ConservationPartners advancing quality wildlife conservation research and education at their zoological sites. See a snapshot of how our partners in Kenya celebrated #WorldGiraffeDay! From coloring activities to planting Acacia tortious trees, local school children learned how they can be young conservationists and help raise awareness for giraffe conservation. Every time you visit the Zoo, you’re helping support our wildlife-saving partners, like the Somali Giraffe Project.
