It's another edition of #50thFridays! In late 2007, Cyclone Sidr ravaged Bangladesh, killing thousands and destroying almost 660,000 hectares of crops in the nation’s southwestern region. In Sidr’s wake, IFDC and the Bangladesh Department of Agricultural Extension initiated the Improved Livelihood for Sidr-Affected Rice Farmers (ILSAFARM) project to help restore rice production by bringing fertilizer deep placement to 280,000 farm families. This commitment to innovation and resilience positioned IFDC as a catalyst for building resilience change in agricultural development, ensuring that countries can withstand and recover from similar challenges. The lingering effects of El Niño extend far beyond mere weather patterns, imposing profound challenges on vulnerable communities, economic stability, and agricultural resilience. In the midst of the formidable challenges posed by El Niño, the 3R program’s strategic pivot toward sustainable solutions heralds positive change. Despite grappling with productivity losses due to El Niño-induced drought, Herculano Branquinho, a 27-year-old smallholder farmer, found solace in the technological interventions facilitated by the program’s inception phase. 📣Agriculture in Africa stands at a critical juncture where soil health is essential for success. The launch of the Hub signifies a significant advancement in addressing our region’s soil health and fertility challenges. We had the honor of celebrating the official opening of the Soil Health and Fertilizer Hub at the IITA headquarters in Ibadan, Nigeria🇳🇬. Dr. Simeon Ehui, Director General at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), delivered a keynote speech emphasizing that soil health is the cornerstone of agricultural prosperity, highlighting its conservation as a collective responsibility across boundaries and sectors. The Regional Hub for Fertilizer and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel was established to provide technical assistance for developing and implementing investment plans in fertilizer and soil health, driven by the needs of individual countries across the region. It focuses on improving soil health and fertility through best agronomic practices, enhancing resource efficiency, building climate resilience, and conducting capacity building at various levels. #Fertilizer #SoilFertility #SoilHealth #FSHHubLaunch #WestAfrica #Sahel International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) UM6P - Mohammed VI Polytechnic University The World Bank (Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project) International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

In Ghana, the sorghum sector is making significant strides to address the shortage of certified sorghum seeds, a critical issue impacting local production and market potential. Faranaya Agribusiness Limited, in partnership with 2SCALE, initiated an Informal Change Alliance to unite key government agencies, private players, and research institutions. This collaborative effort aims to provide certified seeds to smallholder farmers, with a focus on training and supporting seed growers. The initiative has already made substantial progress in producing both open-pollinated and hybrid sorghum seeds, enhancing the commercial viability and sustainability of sorghum farming in Ghana. This inclusive approach, involving everyone from seed producers to policymakers, is driving systemic change for a more organized, sustainable, and market-oriented sorghum sector.
