About us

At IND HEMP our Mission is: To provide innovative agricultural products and services to connect American farmers with the pioneers and businesses that see Hemp as a way to bring real and lasting change to our communities and planet. IND HEMP is currently expanding opportunities for farmers across the American west and beyond by expanding into industrial hemp fiber processing with the construction of a hemp decortication facility adjacent to our oilseed processing plant in Fort Benton. We are currently operating a pilot scale fiber facility working with Montana grown hemp fiber bales and creating separations of clean hurd and bast fibers. With a farmer focused, community and environmental driven mission, IND HEMP measures our success in the growth of opportunities we create for our farmers and the connections and benefits we can offer businesses of all types, across all industries who are looking to use hemp seed food or hemp fiber ingredients and raw materials in their products. We had a successful Grand Opening, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Field Day last week on July 9th! The event was held in conjunction with the Montana Organic Association's 2024 Farm Tours. We would like to thank everyone who came to celebrate the opening of our non-profit research, education and health institute as well as all those who participated in any way to make the whole day a great success. The field day consisted of of 8 different research projects, 3 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon. After lunch, we had a ribbon-cutting ceremony and heard remarks from Christy Clark, Director of the Montana Department of Agriculture as well as a message sent from Senator Jon Tester read by his Agriculture Liaison, Jesse Anderson. We are so grateful to Chandee Bomgardner of Bomgardner Catering for the delicious spread of salads, refreshing drinks, and French Dip sandwiches, using Grist Milling and Bakery's Kamut sourdough baguettes - which we were made by baker Dan from Missoula himself. He delivered them personally on the morning of the event and was also part of one of the projects we spotlighted. Thank you to all our research partners who came to speak about their programs: Dan Venturella of Grist Milling and Bakery, Dalton Wittmer of IND HEMP , Joseph Kibiwott from Timeless Seeds , Dr. Sue Mondal and Dr. Jed Eberly from Montana State University, Dr. Sasha Loewen from the University of Manitoba, and Ashlee Atchison from the Montana Salinity Control Association. We are excited about all the support and encouragement we received to continue our mission to “heal the Earth by growing food as medicine.” You can read more about us on our website www.quinninstitute.org. Please feel free to connect with us on our website’s contact form and stop by for a visit anytime to see what we are doing.

🌱 LCA Development, Environmental Stewardship and Carbon Drawdown Understanding 🌱 We're committed to providing environmentally friendly industrial practices that support a greener future. Our recent collaboration with ZASTI has propelled our Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) program to new heights, enabling us to quantify our carbon footprint and enhance soil organic health. This platform allows for live changes within our supply chain to realize immediate outcomes of those changes. Our mission is to supply transparency into our business model, fostering relationships built on integrity and hard work while remaining conscious of our environmental impact. Through our LCA program, we are able to: 🔍 Measure and Mitigate Environmental Impact: Our custom LCA dashboard, developed in partnership with ZASTI, allows for efficient LCA creation with direct inputs from our supply chain and customers. 🌿 Champion Carbon Sequestration and Regenerative Agriculture: We focus on practices like minimal soil disturbance, cover cropping, and diverse crop rotations to boost soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. 📊 Support B-Corp Certification: Our LCA tool aligns with our B-Corp Certification, ensuring we uphold the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. 💡 Advance Sustainable Agriculture Practices: By identifying environmental "hotspots" and seeking opportunities for improvement, we enhance production efficiency and environmental performance. 🌍 Foster a Sustainable Future: Our efforts aim to inspire all stakeholders to embrace sustainability practices in their operations and lifestyle choices, paving the way for a future that benefits the environment, economy, and society. Thank you to INDHemp’s Morgan Tweet (Elliott) and Eric Earnest for meeting yesterday with the Global Hemp Innovation Center to go over details for designing plans for comparing primary processing methods, characterizing the physical and chemical properties of the industrial hemp fiber materials and byproducts produced, and assessing these for use in the the manufacture of value-added products such as building materials, biobased polymers and composites, activated carbon, and paper and packaging. The INDHemp operation in Fort Benton, Montana https://indhemp.com/ is one of four commercial hemp fiber processing operations in the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture funded Sustainable Agricultural Systems project, ‘Hemp-based Fiber Materials, Technology, and Commerce as Drivers for Northwest American Indian Tribal Economic Development’ https://lnkd.in/gBM9A2EP This is a great example of how university and federal researchers can work with private industry to find practical ways to help advance the bioeconomy and expand markets for American-grown hemp.

🌱 Simple Feedback on IND HEMP’s 2023 Montana Hemp Seed Trials 🌱 In 2023, IND HEMP conducted extensive hemp seed trials across Montana, aiming to identify the best varietals for yield, growth habits, drought resistance, and weed suppression. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to support local farmers and enhance agricultural efficiency. Although the road is challenging, we are excited about Dalton Wittmer putting in the grueling work to get done, what needs to get done. Here’s a small glimpse: Grain Varietals: X-59: Robust growth, excellent weed suppression. Moderate yield due to challenging conditions. Height: 4-7 feet. Henola: Slender fan leaves for better light penetration. Medium yield levels. Height: 5-8 feet. Finola: Rapid, uniform emergence. Drought tolerance and early flowering. Height: 3-5 feet. Earlina 8fc: Pest resistance, consistent performance. Height: 4-6 feet. NWG 2463 & Picolo: Effective weed control, suitable for diverse systems. Height: 5-8 feet. Vega: Vigorous, uniform growth. Adaptable to various applications. Height: 5-8 feet. Fiber Varietals: Yuma T: High yield under irrigation. Height: 10-13 feet. Bialobrzeski: Efficiency in dryland conditions. Height: 9-11 feet. Han NE: Focus on high-quality hurd production. Height: 12-15 feet. SS Beta/IH Williams: Late flowering, high yielder under irrigation. Height: 10-12 feet. 🔍 These trials help us in shaping our strategies and recommendations for farmers, enhancing crop rotations, sustainability, and profitability. We love sharing the comprehensive outcomes with our farming community to dial each parcel in and be as successful as possible.
