It’s part of a new collective to deploy real world solutions for the environment & communities. Together, we’re getting zero done. Great to see some unused furniture and televisions go to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington instead of landfill. The chairs, desks, tables and televisions were moved out from a DC customer who was relocating to a larger space and sent to the Jellef Community Center. The nonprofit, which has served kids since 1953, faces funding cuts making these donations especially valuable in helping them continue their vital programs. Together, we’re getting zero done. #zerowaste #sustainability #community #jellefcommunitycenter

Today we are celebrating … …50 MILLION POUNDS OF FURNITURE! 🎉 That’s how much we’ve diverted from landfill and resold, donated or recycled in the last 12 years. That’s 2,500 truck loads – 18 wheelers. It reduces carbon emissions by 91,750 metric tons – the equivalent of eliminating 235 million miles of driving by gas-powered vehicles.   And it helps more than 3,000 nonprofit and community groups devote more resources to the people they serve.   Reaching this milestone is a huge accomplishment for our team, our customers and our service providers. We are grateful to each of you for your contribution, and we’re just getting started.   Together, we’re getting zero done.   #sustainability #officefurniture #circularity #zerowaste

It was Business Interiors’ pleasure last October to fully utilize MillerKnoll’s “rePurpose Program," a robust partnership between MillerKnoll and Installnet that allows our clients to give their surplus furniture, supplies, and equipment new life. Vulcan Materials Company was adamant that their six floors of existing furniture would not end up in a landfill following the renovation and rethinking of their Birmingham headquarters. The rePurpose Program diverted six floors, nearly 600,000 pounds of furniture, from the landfill and instead rePurposed, reUsed, and reCycled 99.7% of the existing furniture, with 22 local nonprofits and community groups receiving furniture and other office fixtures. Installnet produced this fantastic video of the decommissioning project, highlighting several donation recipients and Vulcan’s dedication to avoiding landfill waste. BI is proud to have participated in such a substantial sustainability project, and we’re thankful for our partners at MillerKnoll and Installnet. On this Earth Day, we celebrate our planet and our ongoing efforts to protect it. For us, it’s about keeping as much furniture waste out of landfill as possible through reuse and recycling. So far this year we have diverted almost 1.3 million pounds of furniture, fixtures, and other assets from landfill. We are immensely proud of this work and the impact it has on the environment, reducing waste and the emissions that cause climate change, and helping community groups by providing them with resources to better fulfill their missions. As more and more organizations redesign workspaces to better meet the needs of today’s hybrid workforce, we encourage facility directors, designers, developers and sustainability leaders to think differently about all that unused furniture. Here’s some tips for making your office redesign or move more sustainable: 🌍 Incorporate furniture made from recycled content or materials that can be recycled into your design for the new space. 🌎 Plan ahead. Start the process of finding new uses for your furniture at least a month before the big move. Consider employee sales or give aways, selling to commercial furniture resellers, recycling, donating to community groups or, as a last resort, turning waste to energy through incineration. 🌏 Align your objectives early and track your results using credible data sources. 🌍 Work with professionals who do this every day, like Installnet. 🌎 Tell your story, sharing the impact your sustainable decommission had on your team, the environment and community groups who receive donations. Check out the video below to learn more. Together, we can protect the earth by getting zero done. #EarthDay #Sustainability #Circularity
