There are so many challenges the LGBTQ+ community continues to face, including significant healthcare disparities when it comes to cancer treatment. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Journal reports that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk for cancer, can experience greater exposure to certain cancer risk factors, are diagnosed with cancer at later stages, have more adverse experiences during treatment, and suffer from poorer cancer outcomes and quality of life after treatment. The need for comprehensive sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data collection is well recognized as a key factor in addressing these disparities. By integrating this data into electronic health records, we can increase the capacity for research to further improve outcomes, inform the development of medical interventions to optimize care for LGBTQ+ individuals, and guide equitable care delivery for all patients, regardless of their background. This June, as we celebrate Pride Month, InterSystems recognizes the importance of achieving health equity for the LGBTQ+ community. Data plays a crucial role in connecting marginalized communities with essential care. A 2020 study by the National LGBT Cancer Network, "OUT: The National Cancer Survey," revealed that LGBTQ+ people of color were less likely to seek medical care for various cancers, facing isolation and significant barriers. Access to life-saving care for all requires utilizing the same methods and technologies across all populations, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
