A collective industry effort to fight poverty in Greater Philadelphia
About us
Life Science Cares is a collective effort of the life science industry to help address the impact of poverty on our neighbors in the greater Bay Area. Life Science Cares started in Boston in 2017 and expanded to Philadelphia in 2019, San Diego in 2020 and the Bay Area in 2021. Through uniting the human and financial resources of life science companies and industry leaders, we support nonprofit organizations that do the best work in fighting poverty and providing educational opportunity in our community. We work with organizations doing work in the areas of basic human survival (hunger, homelessness, domestic abuse, crime prevention, etc.), education (STEM education, college preparation and college success, educational enrichment and inspiration, etc.) and sustainability (job creation, job training, mentoring, and economic development.) 🌟 Exciting Event Recap! 🌟 I had the pleasure of attending the JEVS Human Services Influencer event recently, where about 20 of us came together to pack kits for JEVS Human Services program participants. The evening was filled with networking, great conversations, and lots of fun! 📦💼 A special shoutout to JEVS for their incredible organization and hospitality. We were honored with a book documenting all the volunteer event photos from our groups, a testament to the impactful work being done. 📚✨ I’m grateful for the recognition we received for our partnership and for bringing many amazing life science companies to volunteer. It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to make a difference in our community. #JEVS #VolunteerEvent #CommunityImpact #LifeScience #MakingADifference Life Science Cares Philadelphia

Today I had the pleasure of supporting our grantee eCLOSE Institute and our partner BioAnalysis, LLC at Shift Capital’s MaKen Studios! Life Science Cares Philadelphia facilitated a science kit-packing activity, and it was heartwarming to see the dedication and enthusiasm of everyone involved. 🌟 With the guidance of Alana O'Reilly, Executive Director of eCLOSE and a researcher at Fox Chase Cancer Center, 20 passionate employees packed 60+ kits. These kits will provide Philadelphia students with hands-on science experiments, nurturing a new generation of inquisitive minds. 🎒🔬✨ 🔬 Here are some powerful stories shared by Alana that underscore the impact of eCLOSE’s work: 1. Apricot Seeds Experiment 🌱: • A student brought apricot seeds, worried about his mom, a cancer survivor. He discovered that these seeds break down into cyanide, and his mom was consuming lots of them daily. eCLOSE helped him test the seeds, finding that flies with her same genetic condition (BRC1) survived. This personal concern led to a significant research question about cancer and genetic resistance. 🧪🧬 2. Beetles and Cancer Treatment 🐞: • Another student brought a box of beetles, sharing that her grandpa ate 100 of them with Sprite and was miraculously cancer-free. Skeptical, she tested the beetles and found they release chemicals when scared that can kill lung cancer cells. This discovery connected to traditional treatments in South America, opening new research paths for potential therapies. 🧫💡 3. HPV Project 🧬: • A student initiated a project on HPV after being infected with a strain not covered by the vaccine. This project focuses on understanding why Puerto Rican patients are at higher risk and the molecular differences that make certain strains particularly lethal. This work and many other examples are showing how students are exploring social determinants of health through the School District of Philadelphia. 🏫🔍 eCLOSE’s facts: • Trained 1,700 students in Philadelphia 📚. • Students present their findings at the Franklin Institute in March 📅. • Emphasizes empowerment, with students as principal investigators of their projects 💡. Since 2013, eCLOSE has had: • 330 college graduates 🎓 • 14% pursuing PhDs 📜 • 26% in medical school 🩺 • 118 contributions to articles 📑 We need your support to keep this momentum going: • Spread the word to encourage more Philly kids to join and believe in their potential 🗣️. • Sign up to listen to student presentations on Zoom 💻. Thank you to everyone who makes these opportunities possible. Together, we’re nurturing the next generation of scientists and addressing health disparities in our community. 💙🔬 #LifeScienceCares #eCLOSE #STEMeducation #PhillyKids #HealthEquity #CommunityImpact
