The Central Avenue Bridge project, located just north of the Central Avenue and I-55 Interchange in Stickney, Illinois, is a vital route in a densely-populated area with heavy truck traffic. The thoroughfare has faced significant deck cracking issues since its last reconstruction. Recently, severe cracking had made it unsafe to vehicular traffic, prompting the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (CCDOTH) to prioritize the rehabilitation of this the 33-span, 3,430-foot-long bridge. Michael Baker International is serving as the Prime Construction Manager for the project and Lorig Construction Company is the contractor. Stage-1 of the project was recently completed, with the west half of the bridge deck reconstructed. Traffic is currently in Stage-2 configuration, where the east half of the bridge is under reconstruction. The construction cost is $33 million, and the project is on track for completion by August 2025. The project will enhance travel and connectivity throughout the region. • Michael Baker International’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, office recently hosted nearly 40 young visitors as part of a “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” event. The event offered an opportunity for children ages 8 to 13 to visit a Michael Baker office, learn about the work of our Wolf Pack and discover how We Make a Difference in the communities we serve. Throughout the day, the kids learned about different careers through presentations on topics including federal architecture/sustainability, interior design, land development, federal planning and structures. The kids also enjoyed interactive, hands-on activities. They used boxes to create sustainable buildings, practiced reading drawings with legends, decorated storyboards with interior design ideas, drew maps of the office courtyard, planned their own communities, and built structures out of spaghetti and gum drops. #FutureEngineers #WolfPackPride #STEMeducation
