Study says blockchain could help combat AI misinformation. Two Master of Accounting students in the UO's Lundquist College of Business are shaking up the academic publishing world with a new paper on a timely topic: artificial intelligence and blockchain. Jordan Brewer and Dhru Patel are interested in the intersection of accounting technology and how blockchain could help address some of the more concerning areas of AI. It's relatively rare even for doctoral students to co-publish research papers with a faculty mentor, and it's almost unheard of for students at the master's level to publish, let alone on their first try and with no revisions requested. Drones could revolutionize the construction industry, supporting a new UK housing boom. The UK's new Labor government has pledged to build 1.5 million homes during its first term in office. To achieve this, it promises planning reform and the reintroduction of local housing targets. Yet little attention has been given to the role of new technologies. Drones have the potential to transform the construction industry in the UK. However, our recent study in ACM Journal on Responsible Computing reveals that laws governing commercial drone deployment in the UK remain conflicting, chaotic, and sometimes, contradictory. A drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is a remote-controlled flying machine often equipped with a video camera or sensors. In construction, drones can monitor site progress, conduct safety inspections and even lift heavy materials, with some models capable of lifting over 20kg. Tech outage latest | Airlines and others rush to get back on track after global tech disruption. Transport providers, businesses and governments on Saturday are rushing to get all their systems back online after long disruptions following a widespread technology outage. The biggest continuing effect has been on air travel. Carriers canceled thousands of flights on Friday and now have many of their planes and crews in the wrong place, while airports facing continued problems with checking in and security. At the heart of the massive disruption is CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm that provides software to scores of companies worldwide. The company says the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows, noting that the issue behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack. Aircraft cabin lighting design could help combat jet lag by aligning body clocks to destination's time zone. Cabin lighting inspired by the colors of the Australian landscape and grounded in circadian science will be on Qantas' upcoming Project Sunrise ultra-long-haul flights to help minimize jet lag and improve customer well-being. The design, which includes simulations of sunsets and sunrises, is a result of more than 150 hours of testing in the Airbus Customer Definition Center in Hamburg. Light plays an important part in controlling our body clocks. By manipulating the timing, strength and wavelengths of light during a flight, it is possible to help passengers adapt to a destination's time zone while in the air and reduce jetlag. Engineers evaluate cybersecurity risks associated with EV fast-charging equipment. Engineers at Southwest Research Institute have identified cybersecurity vulnerabilities with electric vehicles (EVs) using direct current fast-charging systems, the quickest, commonly used way to charge electric vehicles. The high-voltage technology relies on power line communication (PLC) technology to transmit smart-grid data between vehicles and charging equipment. The research is part of SwRI's ongoing efforts to help the mobility sector and government improve automotive cybersecurity spanning embedded automotive computers and smart-grid infrastructure. It builds upon a 2020 project where SwRI hacked a J1772 charger, disrupting the charging process with a lab-built spoofing device. A strategy to enhance the stability of perovskite solar cells under reverse bias conditions. If an individual solar cell is shaded and other cells in the same module are not, the sunlit cells can try to drive current through the shaded cell, resulting in an increase in temperature and potential damage to the cells. These conditions put the shadowed cell under a condition known as reverse bias, which makes solar cells unstable and deteriorates their performance over time. Researchers at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently introduced a new strategy that could improve the stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) under reverse bias conditions. This strategy, outlined in a paper published in Nature Energy, could facilitate the future deployment of perovskite-based photovoltaics (PVs) in real-world settings. Southwest Airlines unveils electric air taxi venture. US carrier Southwest Airlines plans to jointly develop a fleet of electric air taxis to serve the California market with transportation startup Archer Aviation, the companies announced Friday. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding envisioning Southwest making use of Archer's "Midnight" aircraft throughout the nation's largest state, offering short trips from California's 14 airports. The aircraft is "designed to transform urban travel, replacing 60-to-90-minute commutes by car with estimated 10-to-20-minute electric air taxi flights," said a joint press release.
