Yesterday, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned its earlier decision declaring Mississippi’s lifetime voting ban—which applies only to individuals convicted of one of Mississippi’s 23 disenfranchising crimes—unconstitutional. Mississippians convicted of crimes that do not take away their right to vote can still vote. The Fifth Circuit’s ruling upholds Mississippi’s racist Constitution of 1890 and is out of step with the public: 80% of Mississippians believe that people who have successfully re-entered society should get their right to vote back. State lawmakers must align Mississippi law with Mississippians’ core values. MCJ and its partners will keep fighting to ensure they do. Read more in our joint press release with our partners, with whom we filed an amicus brief in this proceeding. Another win! Another Victory for Justice! A federal court has ordered Mississippi to redraw its 2022 state legislative maps in several areas after concluding those maps unlawfully diluted the voting strength of Black Mississippians. As we approach the 59th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, this decision marks a significant step toward upholding its promise. Black Mississippians deserve an equal voice, and this ruling brings us closer to that goal. Read press release here - https://lnkd.in/gZtQ2_CK #VotingRights #Equality #JusticeForAll
