About us

Montclair Local is an independent local news organization founded in 2017 with the mission to “spark dialogue, objectively inform and build community in Montclair.” Since 2021, the Local has been a non-profit organization, supported by the community. In the spring of 2023, the Local’s board of trustees announced it would merge with Baristanet, a digital news outlet covering the Montclair area since 2004. Uniting two strong local organizations will offer readers a richer menu of stories and services.

  • At Montclair Local, we love what we do—like showcasing the magic of Montclair's balloon maestro, Jonathan Lindner. Written by Talia Adderley, this story was a joyful celebration of a business that truly makes Montclair special. And it really resonated with readers, who left comments on social media, some with balloon emojis, not only attesting to Lindner's way with balloons (they last forever!) but thanking us for shining a light on a Montclair treasure. Local news has the power to connect us as a community and 🎈lift us up. To those that thanked us—you are most welcome. We are committed to keeping you informed and bringing you accountability journalism along with buoyant stories about our very special community. But we can't do it without you. This investigation by the Local, based on interviews with present and former township employees and experts, shows that MFA should have been installed years earlier.

  • After 23 years, four kids and two businesses—it’s safe to say that I feel engaged and invested in Montclair. Relying on strong, local, independent journalism keeps me informed about what’s going on in our community. Only a local news organization with boots on the ground can effectively engage with the municipal government, public schools and small businesses to share valuable information that impacts our lives on a daily basis. Montclair Local fills those shoes in our township. I want to highlight my support as the parent of four children who went through our public schools. With all the difficult news swirling around us daily, I love reading the Montclair Local news and seeing positive, fun, informative stories about our kids, their teachers and coaches. Without a local newsroom, many of their accomplishments would go unsung. These are stories that highlight everything we should be proud of in Montclair. My family supports Montclair Local because we know that a strong local news organization is vital for the future of our children and our town. If you agree, show your support with a donation to keep local news alive and well: https://lnkd.in/e76ZC6NA Wendy Lacey Montclair resident, parent of four and business owner

We’re in the home stretch of the first-ever New Jersey Technology & Sustainability Accelerator and with support in technology investments, Blue Engine programming and customized coaching, and peer-to-peer learning, the 21 organizations across the state continue to see material gains in four dimensions: 💰𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡: Establishing new revenue streams and buttoning up financial processes;  🛠️ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 & 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: Investing in critical new tools and improving their existing tech stacks; 📣 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 & 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Crafting compelling value propositions and finding new and better ways to connect with their audiences; and 🤝 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 & 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: Streamlining workflows and nurturing team collaboration. Liz George, from Montclair Local Nonprofit News, sums up the experience perfectly: "I feel more expansive. I feel like we have new tools and we have new ways of thinking. Even the way we're thinking of ideas and executing on things is heightened because of this process." We’re incredibly proud of these organizations' progress so far and can’t wait to see how they finish this experience and continue to improve long after it ends. Thanks again to our incredibly gracious and supportive partners at the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium (NJ CIC) and the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University.
