The Blood and Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy team at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center recently celebrated a big milestone – 3,000 patients treated since the program offered the first transplants in South Carolina in 1987. Dr. Michelle Hudspeth, director of Adult and Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, said the quickening pace of transplants shows both the expansion of treatment options and the dedication of the BMT and Cellular Therapy team to bringing this therapy to as many patients as possible. https://lnkd.in/egVHzGFH

Changing What's Possible
About us
MUSC Children’s Health is changing what’s possible for children and their families by providing the pediatric clinical and research expertise every child deserves. From promoting healthy lifestyles to offering life-saving treatments, MUSC Children’s Health delivers comprehensive and compassionate care to children throughout South Carolina and beyond in more than 27 specialty areas. MUSC’s integrated children’s health care system consists of the 250-bed MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital (SJCH) and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion located on the Charleston peninsula, which is one of the most patient and family centered and technologically advanced hospitals for children and their families in the United States; the Charles P. Darby Research Institute where pediatric research teams conduct significant and ongoing efforts; the R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion in North Charleston which offers an ambulatory care clinic and surgery center, specialty care and after hours clinics; and finally, expanded depth and breadth of expertise in multiple locations throughout the state, offering primary, urgent and specialty care in person or via telehealth. To provide the best care for children now and in the future, MUSC Children’s Health puts the needs of patients and their families first. This intentional way of moving forward aligns with the emerging national best practice of offering children’s ambulatory and specialty services within local communities and delivery of more acute care at a major flagship hospital. As a result, families receive the best combination of high quality, lower cost and easily accessible care as possible. “There were so many moving parts, and everyone helped out to make this happen. And then we had the teamwork in the operating room between our surgical teams, anesthesia teams and perfusion teams to take two complex patients to the operating room in a very short period of time and get great surgical outcomes.” Two children received heart transplants at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital on the same day, a rare feat made possible by a team that has grown in size and strength over the past several years. https://lnkd.in/dVz2HCss

South Carolina Pediatric Burn Center care team members participated in the Charleston Memorial Stair Climb this past Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum to #neverforget and pay tribute to the 412 First Responders lost on 9/11. This event is held annually the same week of the Charleston 9 anniversary to honor and recognize local first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Thank you to our first responders who put their lives on the line daily to serve their communities.

An estimated 2,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease (SCD), the most common inherited blood disorder, annually in the United States. It is a life-limiting disease that affects all parts of the body, causing multi-system complications that often result in life-threatening infections, stroke and organ damage. People living with sickle cell disease experience periodic episodes of acute pain that typically become more frequent and severe over time. We are proud to be a national leader in treatment and research to better serve our patients and families. One example is our involvement in a transformative clinical trial currently being led by Dr. Jennifer Jaroscak. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3Rw2Zki

A pre-term baby will likely face a myriad of health challenges in the weeks and months after birth. In addition, 1-in-20 neonates will also develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) - a devastating, life-threatening inflammation of the intestines. Learn about the work going on in the lab & at the bedside at MUSC, led by Dr. Katherine Chetta, to help #endNEC. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eMAUH6HG
