#DYK North Carolina faces a shortage of registered nurses by 2030, although UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing recently received funding to increase the number of nursing graduates by 2026. The school plans to expand enrollment in its degree programs by up to 50% in the future, employ more nursing faculty, establish new pre-licensure pathways for accelerated graduation, and more. “Expanding enrollment is a critical component of combatting the nursing workforce shortage in North Carolina, and as a recognized leader in nursing education worldwide, Carolina Nursing is uniquely positioned to meet this growing need for our population," said Dean Valerie Howard, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN. Novant Health is home to Mecklenburg County's only donor milk depot designed to help feed babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and hospital nurseries across the state. In partnership with the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Novant Health is one of five locations across the state designated for donors to store breastmilk. Previously, WakeMed's Mothers' Milk Bank was the only milk bank in North Carolina. This collaboration will reach more babies in need of milk, aiding in their nutrition, growth and development. "By establishing ourselves as a central drop off site, our hope is to reduce the expense of donor human milk in North Carolina and increase accessibility for newborns in need,” said Laura Corsig, an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, and manager of lactation services for Novant Health’s greater Charlotte region.
