🚨 Important news for the #SustainableBlueEconomy 🌊 As of July 2024, 27 countries are calling for a moratorium on deep seabed mining (DSM). 🔍Why a moratorium? •Scientific unknowns about deep ocean ecosystems •Potential damage to pristine and biodiverse habitats •Risks to food webs and fisheries affecting livelihoods that depend on this food security •Impacts on ocean carbon storage 🌐 At Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance we recommend our members consider a precautionary pause until at least 2030, which coincides with the conclusion of the UN Ocean Decade. More research on the environmental, social and economic risks are also required, and strong regulatory frameworks need to be put in place to reduce and manage the impacts of these risks. Equally, we believe that the International Seabed Authority needs to be reformed to allow for greater transparency and environmental accountability. 📢 What action can we take? ➡️ Learn more at ORRAA’s website: https://lnkd.in/eFQu5MDZ 🌊 Businesses can support ORRAA member, WWF’s statement calling for a Deep Sea Mining Moratorium: https://lnkd.in/dVSR2APe #DeepSeabedMining #OceanConservation #Sustainability #EnvironmentalProtection #ORRAA #WWF

Multi-sector collaboration pioneering finance and insurance products that build resilience to ocean risk.
About us
Our ocean is changing faster than at any time in human history, with wide-ranging implications for coastal infrastructure, biodiversity and the lives and livelihoods of billions of people. Coastal communities in developing countries, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and other low-lying areas are likely to be most severely impacted, with women and girls especially hard-hit. By 2050, an estimated 800 million people will be at risk from storm surge from extreme weather events, and over 570 low-lying coastal cities will face sea level rise of at least 0.5 metres. There are many perceived barriers to investing in nature-based solutions for coastal protection. These include a lack of understanding of how investing in natural capital can provide a timely and productive return, and insufficient data and modelling capabilities for investors to quantify ocean-derived risk. There is a huge opportunity to develop pioneering finance and insurance products that reduce ocean risk and build the resilience of coastal areas to emerging hazards. The United Nations has called on the finance and insurance industries to respond to these challenges. The Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) is a multi-sector collaboration designed to drive $500 million into ground-breaking finance products by 2030 that invest in coastal natural capital. In so doing, it will incentivize blended finance and private investment into the regions and communities that need it most. ORRAA aims to surface at least 15 novel finance products by 2025 to build the foundation of this new marketplace. To help reach this goal, ORRAA is launching its Ocean Resilience Innovation Challenge to identify and nurture a pipeline of up to 10 finance and insurance innovations.

🌊 Blue Nature: Our Coastal Superhero! 🦸♀️ Did you know that nature is our best ally in protecting coastal communities from climate change? We’re talking Mangroves 🌱 ... Seagrasses 🌊 … Saltmarshes 💚… Coral reefs 🪸 These nature-based solutions aren’t just beautiful – they’re lifesavers! Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance's Coastal Risk Index (CRI) reveals blue nature: •Protects 14.2 million people from annual flooding •Prevent more than USD$360 billion in storm damage yearly. Why does it matter? Coastal communities, particularly in Least-Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), rely on healthy blue nature for: •Food security 🍽️ •Economic stability 💼 •Social well-being 🤝 At Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, we’re bridging the gap between finance, insurance, governments, non-profits and stakeholders from the Global South to reduce vulnerability and build resilience in coastal communities. #ORRAA #ResilientCoasts #BlueFinance #NatureBasedSolutions

🚨 Hurricane Beryl: A Stark Reminder of Coastal Vulnerability 🌊🏝️ Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact on coastal communities across the #Caribbean serves as a stark reminder of the increasing threats posed by intensifying tropical storms in our heating world. The loss of life, injuries and widespread destruction left in Beryl’s wake underscore the urgent need for action to protect vulnerable coastal regions. Climate scientists have long warned that a heating ocean acts as “jet fuel for hurricanes,” needed for rapid intensification and increased potential. With ocean temperatures at record highs and 8-13 hurricanes predicted for the 2024 season, human-created emissions are absorbed by our Ocean and waterways, causing the temperatures to rise and enhancing the severity of these hurricanes. This is the reason why Karen Sack and Chip Cunliffe founded Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance alongside our amazing partners. The concept of #OceanRisk is often overlooked but becoming increasingly critical. The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl serves as a sobering reminder: that we need to act now to protect #CoastalCommunities and the Ocean. https://lnkd.in/e3EB_Tpv #BuildingAndAdapting #OceanResilience #SustainableBlueEconomy

🌊 ORRAA's Commitment to Resilient Coastal Communities 🌊 At Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance, we’re dedicated to enhancing the resilience of small-scale fisheries (SSF) and coastal communities. Our innovative financial and insurance products are designed to help these communities adapt to the challenges posed by climate change and extreme ocean heating. 🔹 Building Resilient Coastal Communities Through our projects, we empower small-scale fishers with the tools they need to withstand environmental changes, like the work we’re doing with Rare and WTW on Weather Index-Based Parametric Insurance in the Philippines offering affordable, scalable insurance coverage, helping fishers mitigate income losses during adverse weather conditions. Thanks to the UK's #BluePlanetFund and Government of Canada for their financial support. https://lnkd.in/e93r9df2 📅 Quarterly Theme: Building and Adapting Resilient Coastal Communities This quarter, we’re highlighting our efforts to create sustainable, resilient communities that thrive despite climate challenges. 👉 Discover more about some of our impactful projects in the comments below. #ORRAA #SmallScaleFisheries #CoastalCommunities #ClimateChange #Resilience

🇵🇹 From Lisbon to…Microsoft Teams? 👩🏽💻 Yes, that’s right! Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance is a global ocean alliance with one mission, but we’re certainly not limited to one location. We work together (while apart) to inspire and educate the finance and insurance sector, governments and non-profits and stakeholders from across the world into taking responsible #OceanAction. 🌊 Our mission, after all, is to build the resilience of 250 million climate-vulnerable coastal people by 2030, deploying at least USD$500m of investment into coastal and ocean resilience. While it was wonderful for the team to meet in Lisbon in March, our online interactions are what keep us on track, exchanging ideas and building strategies through radical collaboration. 💪 Well done to everyone who participated in the virtual ORRAA team meeting marathon last week! 👏🎉 Learn more about what we do 👉 https://lnkd.in/gx2pSMqm #OneOcean #OneORRAA #CoastalAndOceanResilience

Have you listened to Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance board member and former Maldives Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Shauna Aminath, on The Business Times’ “Lens on #Singapore” podcast discussing the visible impacts of climate change in the Maldives? 🎧🇲🇻 The future of Maldives hangs in the balance. Shauna highlights the country’s vulnerability to sea level rise, with resulting tidal swells, coastal erosion and flooding. At this rate, the Maldives could go under water as soon as 2050. 🗣️ Shauna explains the injustice in climate related events: “The Maldives itself only contributes 0.003% to global greenhouse gases. We are having to spend more and more every year on mitigating the impacts of climate change. 30% of our domestic budget [currently] goes on adaptation.” Listen to more of this story here: https://lnkd.in/grgQ5yHS or on Spotify here: https://lnkd.in/eKS2J-p7 #CoastalResilience #CoastalCommunities #CoastalAdaptation #ORRAA
