It was a Red Flag Warning day with high temperatures and low humidity when a sudden lighting strike ignited a fire on the remote north side of Bennett Mountain in Douglas County, CO. Within minutes, the Pano system detected smoke, provided video confirming it as wildfire and triangulated coordinates from two camera stations - one from CORE Electric Cooperative and one from Xcel Energy. The Douglas County Office of Emergency Management, seeing the triangulation and video intelligence, initiated a Helitack and rapid initial attack. A crew of 40 from the County and the USDA Forest Service hiked for nearly two and half hours to reach the site while helicopters dropped 17,000 gallons of water to fully contain the fire at three acres. The quick response kept this high risk fire from progressing to what could have been a fast-moving, large-scale fire. Together, CORE and Xcel Energy will have 48 stations live in Colorado in the coming months along with a dozen more from other local governments and enterprises for a total of 60. This collaborative effort enhances the precision and effectiveness of wildfire detection and response, significantly benefiting the communities they serve. The city of City of Rancho Palos Verdes Verdes, CA, is enhancing wildfire detection and response with AI technology. Pano AI and the city of RPV officially marked the launch of four stations utilizing our high-definition cameras for a 360-degree view of the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula and #AI to detect the earliest signs of smoke. Our system alerts first responders within minutes of detection, ensuring that both firefighters and municipal leaders can act swiftly to protect communities. A special thank you to RPV Mayor John Cruikshank, PE, F.ASCE and California Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi for bringing Pano’s technology to your communities. We also want to thank Assistant Fire Chief Brian Kane and the Los Angeles County Fire Department for your hard work and dedication to keeping these communities safe. Also, thank you SpectrumOne for a great segment about the launch! Last weekend, Pano cameras in Colorado spotted a fire near Breckenridge. Within minutes our system alerted the Red, White & Blue Fire’s Wildland Division and the crew’s rapid response kept the runaway campfire to an eighth of an acre. Our patented triangulation process pinpointed the location of the fire, saving what could have been hours of searching. Thank you Xcel Energy for deploying more than 28 Pano stations in high fire risk areas of Colorado, with 42 expected in the coming months. Day 1 of Edison Electric Institute's #EEI2024 got off to a strong start! The focus on wildfire prevention was front and center with insightful panels and discussions emphasizing how electric companies can reduce the risk of grid infrastructure being involved in wildfire ignitions by deploying key mitigation technologies and practices. Maria Pope, Portland General Electric's CEO, and Chris Rogers built a strong case for investing in #wildfire mitigation technologies such as Cameras/AI and Weather Stations and emphasized the importance of partnering with the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management on what has become “a society-wide issue.” Patti Poppe and Steven Powell highlighted the diverse approaches to wildfire mitigation, emphasizing the importance of tailored solutions. Technology investments in situational awareness, vegetation management, and grid hardening, alongside partnerships with local command centers, were noted as key strategies for success. Our own Sonia Kastner walked through the impactful Kutch Fire case study, demonstrating the critical need for timely situational awareness for PGE and responding fire agencies to reduce the spread of fire and keep the power on in the area. We look forward to what Day 2 has to offer. And if you are at the conference, please stop by to see us in The Hub! #wildfiremitigation #utilityindustry
