Organ scarcity poses a demanding challenge on a nation where more than 100,000 people wait for the possibility of a donor organ transplant. This morning, Newsweek asked Paragonix founder and CEO, Dr. Lisa Anderson, how optimizing today's technologies can make an impact. "While the state of transplantation is not without challenges, we can address many of them with the technology we have today," Dr. Anderson shared. "We owe it to patients waiting for a second chance to build on our progress and achieve even more through ongoing research, innovation, and collaboration across the industry." Yasuhiro Shudo, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, recently used the BAROguard Donor Lung Preservation System for the first time at Stanford University. The Stanford team used the device to enhance safety margins in the donor organ procurement, and preserve the donor bilateral lung during its journey to Stanford. The patient, who received a multiorgan liver and lung transplant, is doing well postoperatively and was recently discharged. “The airway pressure control is the strongest point of using this device. It has the potential to decrease primary graft dysfunction after transport or during ischemia-reperfusion,” Dr. Shudo said. “Even in cases where the donor lung exhibits minor air leakage or suspected injury/trauma, this device may provide specific advantages by optimizing positive pressure on the donor lung.” https://lnkd.in/egWQCnCD

A heartfelt congratulations to the many thoracic experts - including Prof. Laurens Ceulemans - who have led this initiative to examine the application of controlled hypothermic technology such as LUNGguard to adapt to versatile transplant workflows. This publication represents a vital step forward on the path to discovering every possible advantage for transplant clinicians and recipients alike.
Assistant professor in Surgery, KU Leuven; Thoracic and Transplant Surgeon, University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium
The Lung Transplant centers from UZ Leuven 🫁and Prague 🫁 are at the forefront in Europe 🇪🇺 of adapting the use of controlled hypothermic storage for lung transplantation. In a recent paper, our consecutive experience with 36 patients showcased the effectiveness of using the LUNGGuard, a portable device maintaining a consistent temperature from procurement to implantation. We highlight the use in extended criteria donors like in the groundbreaking case of a 94-year-old DCD donor successfully transplanted in Leuven. Indications for using the device were mostly overnight 🌇 bridging, but also remote procurement 🚀, logistics⏱️, or rescue allocation⛑️. 🔬 While these results are promising, we look forward to more research and data which are essential to fully understand the impact of controlled hypothermic storage and refine our protocols for better patient outcomes. 👏 Kudos to the Leuven and Prague (Robert Lischke) teams, and congratulations to the first authors An-Lies Provoost and René Novysedlák! Thanks to Cristiano Amarelli for the kind invitation to contribute to this special issue! Paragonix Technologies, Inc. #LungTransplantation #OrganDonation #HealthcareInnovation
