30+ years ago, Robert Shiller wrote a compelling academic paper arguing for perpetual futures on real estate indices, prompted by a glaring question: why doesn’t real estate, the world's largest source of measurable wealth, have a liquid spot market? @Parcl has done just that At the time Shiller saw two primary barriers to perpetual futures contracts for illiquid assets or indices: 1. infrequency of observed pricing, 2. no pre-existing financial infrastructure to facilitate markets around these illiquid assets/indices. Shiller attempted to address #1 through the creation of the notorious Case Shiller index, which has tracked major US housing market prices since 1990. He proposed addressing #2 by establishing markets for perpetual claims on cash flows matching indices of dividends or rents. Shiller was well ahead of his time and limited by the state of technology in terms of reaching his vision. In the 30+ years since his paper was published, technology has more than caught up to make this vision a reality. Information moves fast now in terms of data and there are technologies like blockchains & smart contracts built upon them, that enable trustless formation of capital and decentralized settlement allowing for speculation on index prices, absent claims on underlying cash flows. Over the course of its lifecycle - @Parcl + @ParclLabs have evolved in many ways to address Shiller’s two primary concerns. First, through data. @ParclLabs leverages real time pricing information in terms of real estate sales and listings to create a daily price point for real estate markets. The result is the Parcl Labs Price Feed (PLPF) which underpins the Parcl Trading Platform. Second, The Parcl Trading Platform, specifically the V3 iteration that just launched to Solana’s mainnet, is a Perpetual Futures DEX (decentralized exchange) that allows users to take positions (long and short) around the Parcl Labs Price Feed as a reference price.
