💡 Intern Spotlight 💡 Meet Jose Garcia, a senior set to graduate from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez in December with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Jose is interning with our Transmission Substation Engineering department, helping design, construct, maintain and upgrade our transmission substations. The department also ensures safety and regulatory standards are met by monitoring system performance and addressing operational issues. Jose couldn't pick just one memorable experience; he says visiting a 500 kV substation and shadowing inside a helicopter to inspect transmission equipment were his favorite activities. We were happy to have Jose join us from Puerto Rico, and we wish him good luck in his final semester this fall!

PPL Electric Utilities Vice President and Chief Operating Officer David Quier recently took part in a panel discussion at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Summer Policy Summit. The discussion focused on how to better leverage existing infrastructure to get the most out of transmission and distribution assets to maintain reliability and affordability as we confront challenges with resource planning and expanding infrastructure. While the need for upgrades and new infrastructure will continue in the future, it’s vitally important to explore how we can make the most of what we have now. Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) are an alternative to optimize capacity on the current electric grid. Our industry-leading use of Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) technology on our transmission system is a great example of how GETs can free up line capacity, defer the need for infrastructure upgrades and reduce congestion across the system. Facts about PPL Electric’s use of DLR technology: · We are using DLR sensors to collect real-time information about conditions such as wind speed and line temperature that affect the performance of transmission lines. · Through a collaborative effort with PJM Interconnection, we’re feeding hourly day-ahead DLR forecasts to PJM, which has resulted in lower congestion on the PJM system. · Data collected is used to increase the amount of electricity delivered over the lines when needed, allowing for decreased congestion and improved reliability. · It’s estimated that our use of DLR can save customers approximately $23 million in congestion costs annually. This is another way we’re doing our part to maximize existing infrastructure as we continue to plan and prepare for the energy demands of tomorrow. Thanks to fellow panelists, Sarah Toth, PhD and Chris Villarreal as well as moderator Kimberly Barrow, Esq., Vice Chair of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. #ElectricUtilities #ElectricUtility #Electric #Transmission #Distribution #Infrastructre #Relability #NARUC #GETs #GridEnhancingTechnologies #DERs #DistributedEnergyResources #PPLElectricUtilities #PPLElectric #Electricity #ResourceAdequacy #DynamicLineRating #DLR

We are always proud of the excellent work done by our interns. As our summer internship program winds down, we want to highlight some of the young professionals across several departments who are enjoying their experience and representing their institutions. Meet Sawyer Haney, a rising senior at Messiah University majoring in Electrical Engineering. Sawyer is interning with our transmission planning team, helping identify and address both current and future demands on our transmission system. Transmission planning also conducts studies on the system to identify possible regulatory violations. Sawyer says he won’t forget the opportunity he had to tag along for a helicopter ride to inspect transmission towers. He looks forward to continuing his professional development and taking advantage of any opportunities before beginning the next step of his career!

PPL Electric Utilities President Christine Martin took part in an engaging panel discussion on resource adequacy at last week’s #MACRUC meeting. By the end of this decade, projected generation retirements in PJM are outpacing replacement generation and increasing demand. Combined with projected load growth and the transition to clean energy, both near-term solutions and long-term market structure changes will be needed to address this gap. In the meantime, PPL Electric is committed to doing its part to deliver reliable service to our customers at reasonable prices. We have and continue to make investments in our transmission and distribution system to maximize capacity of existing infrastructure and optimize our ability to connect much needed, new generation to the Grid. #ResourceAdequacy #Reliability #Energy

Recent storms brought thunder, lightning and high winds to our service territory and impacted more than 250,000 customers over the past two weeks. This past week’s storm has become the most impactful of 2024 in which we saw more than 1,300 individual damage locations and more than 150,000 customers lose power. The widespread damage from Wednesday’s storms created a multi-day restoration event for our employees, and we appreciate our customers’ patience, understanding and messages of encouragement toward our employees. Our team responded, working around the clock, as we activated numerous field and office employees to assist in restoration efforts. We also brought in nearly 1,000 workers from outside our company to assist due to the extent of damage the storm caused. Their hard work and dedication are something to be commended. During Wednesday's damaging storms, crews were able to restore about 71% of the impacted customers within the first day and a half. And, over the three storm events in the past two weeks, crews managed to restore more than 130,000 combined customers within the first 24 hours of the storms. We recognize how difficult it can be to not have power. We are committed to ensuring that when our customers flip the switch, their lights come on. We’re taking every step to provide the most reliable service possible and minimize future outages. We will continue to invest in our grid to make it more reliable and prepare year-round for severe weather events like those we just experienced. Again, we’d like to extend a thank you to our customers for weathering the storm with us. We appreciate their patience as we worked as safely and quickly as possible to get the lights back on after the recent run of severe weather that affected the communities we are proud to serve.

“To call yourself a citizen of a municipality or a small borough like Picture Rocks, you have to be involved every chance that you get.” In addition to working at PPL Electric for 40 years, Dave Bender has served as the volunteer mayor of Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania for 28 years. Dave is a shining example of giving back to the communities we serve, and we’re beyond grateful to work with him!
