Over the last five weeks as a WSIA (Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association) Intern at Richmond National, I had the opportunity to explore the carrier portion of the Excess and Surplus (E&S) part of the insurance industry, gaining invaluable insights and experience. I participated in meetings with many departments, gaining a holistic view of how an insurance carrier operates from the top down. I connected with various industry professionals, from underwriters and division managers to executives and the leadership team, who generously shared with me their expertise and career advice. As intern, I rotated through various divisions of the Underwriting Department, including General Casualty, Commercial Property, Professional Liability, and many more. I shadowed many underwriting professionals, learning about the entire lifecycle of a submission—from clearance, research, quoting, and binding. I also had the opportunity to review submissions, conduct research, analyze loss runs, and quote policies, receiving valuable feedback from experienced underwriters. I would like to acknowledge Tony Cocilo, AINS, CRIS, Christopher Robbins Jr., Bob Linkous JD, CPCU, Josh Beason, Brian Redmond, Taylor Mize, LaTara LeSure-Hill, M.Div, AIS, CISR, CPIA, Bryan Farrar, Luis Sagal, Madeleine Alderman, Jamey Schoenhard, Kris Grier, CPCU, Alisa Caston, AAI, CRIS, Nicolas Kurfees - MLIS, CRIS, Kalee Nichols, RPLU, Darren Nichols, Kara Dye, Jeff Austin, RPLU and many others for sharing their knowledge with me. I also had the privilege of meeting with several members of the leadership team, gaining insights into their roles and functions within the company. I would like to express my gratitude to Ashlee Randall, Aimee Venn, Jamie Bock, Douglas Carson, Ryan Karel, FCAS, Joe Kavanagh and Nora N. Crouch for their willingness to spend their time having conversations with me. These conversations were incredibly valuable and provided me with a deeper understanding of the company's strategic direction. Additionally, I would like to appreciate David T. Vanalek and Nathaniel Van Huss over at the Legal Department for giving me the opportunity to shadow their work and gain insights into regulatory compliance, state filings, reinsurance treaties, and other functions of the legal department. This experience broadened my understanding of the legal and regulatory aspects of the E&S industry. Last but not least, I am deeply thankful to Steve Gillespie and Jessica S. who guided, mentored, and regularly checked in with me throughout the internship. Their support was crucial in making my experience at Richmond National enriching and productive.
