Through compassion and action, together we can create a hunger free Eastern Massachusetts.

About us

The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. GBFB powers a distribution network of over 600 partner agencies in 190 cities and towns across Eastern Massachusetts, feeding more than 600,000 people and distributing over 104 million pounds of food annually. GBFB acquires 76% of our food through financial contributions from generous donors to procure high-nutrient quality food. With our purchasing power, we can confidently guarantee that for every dollar donated, 92 cents goes to hunger-relief efforts. We also benefit from the generosity of over 27,500 volunteers annually who help to sort and pack food products to be distributed to our partner agencies across Eastern MA. GBFB works to acquire, store, organize, and distribute food through our 600 partner agencies that include local food pantries, community meal programs, homeless and residential shelters, youth programs, senior centers, and day-care centers embedded in communities throughout 190 cities and towns of Eastern Massachusetts. GBFB’s partner agency locator provides an easy way for people in need to find help nearby. GBFB also distributes food directly to those in need through dedicated programs that serve particularly vulnerable groups, such as seniors and children. Since 2009, GBFB has operated out of a state-of-the-art, 117,000 square foot food distribution facility, the Yawkey Distribution Center, located in the Newmarket section of Boston. The Greater Boston Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nation's largest hunger-relief organization.

In the heart of the bustling city of Quincy, DeeAnn, and her vibrant seven-year-old daughter, Nevaeh, find solace and sustenance at GBFB’s partner, The Salvation Army food pantry. As a single mother of three, DeeAnn relies on the pantry's support to feed her family, sharing, "the food pantry means the world to me.” Despite financial challenges, she remains positive, supported by the love of her family and the assistance of SNAP. Did you know 1 in 5 seniors in Massachusetts faces food insecurity? Our latest Food, Equity, and Access Study reveals the profound impact on their health and well-being. Rising food costs, transportation barriers, and fixed incomes make accessing nutritious food a daily challenge for older adults. At GBFB, we're dedicated to supporting our seniors through mobile markets, local food pantries, and federal programs. With the help of partners like Senior Whole Health of Massachusetts, we're making strides to ensure no senior goes hungry. Learn more about the state of senior hunger and how we’re addressing it in our community here https://lnkd.in/etmBKtUN. Together, we have the power to end hunger here.

Thank you, Boston Globe Media, for shining a light on the financial challenges faced by many of our network partners across the state, specifically Mystic Valley YMCA. Hunger is no longer an emergency, but rather a lived reality for 1 in 3 people in Massachusetts. As federal aid through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dwindles, the pressure on the charitable food system is immense. To mitigate the negative impacts of this funding drying up, we must come together as neighbors to support these vital services to ensure no one goes hungry.
