Welcome to Week/End, your quick-hit guide to this week’s sustainability news at the intersection of fashion, ethics, sustainability, and business! 📰 Here’s what happened this week: 🇮🇹 Italy’s competition watchdog is investigating Giorgio Armani Group and Christian Dior Italy for alleged unfair practices involving worker abuse and exploitation by their suppliers, including severe underpayment and unsafe conditions for undocumented migrants. 🏷️ Representatives María Elvira Salazar and Sean Casten introduced H.R. 8978, the Voluntary Sustainable Apparel Labeling Act. This act aims to provide consumers with clear information about the climate impact of apparel through a voluntary labeling program managed by the EPA, FTC, and the Department of Agriculture. 📉 A TikTok trend called “underconsumptioncore” is promoting minimalistic beauty routines and simple living, countering the platform’s usual consumerist culture. ⚖️ A class-action lawsuit in Florida alleges that Lululemon’s “Be Planet” campaign misled consumers about the company’s environmental impact, accusing it of greenwashing. The lawsuit wants to end the campaign and provide financial restitution to consumers. 🌱 Better Cotton and FS Impact Finance have launched a fund to improve gender equality and sustainability for smallholder cotton farmers in India, providing financial support for sustainable farming practices and empowering women in agriculture. ♻️ The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) is now in force, enhancing product sustainability and circularity with robust ecodesign requirements, including improved durability, reusability, recyclability, and a Digital Product Passport. It also bans the destruction of unsold textiles and footwear, requiring companies to disclose data on discarded products. What do you think about this week's news? Last year's Sustainable Fashion Forum was inspiring. So I am truly excited to head to Austin next week and speak at this year's Forum about integrating human rights and labor standards into fashion's core operations - in a chat with Sanchita Saxena and moderated by Melissa O de León. Among other topics, I'll discuss deception in social audits and ways to improve the system of private regulation. Hope to see you there!

📈 What are the main challenges companies face when trying to balance sustainability with immediate profitability? 📊 How can companies adjust their financial models and strategies to account for the long-term benefits of sustainability, despite the potential for short-term financial challenges? 🛡️What strategies can be employed to mitigate the risks associated with prioritizing sustainability over immediate profitability? 🗣️💰 How do you communicate the financial benefits of sustainability initiatives to shareholders and investors who prioritize short-term returns? 📊🌿📈 How do you measure and track the ROI on your sustainability investments? Beyond ROI, what metrics can companies use to measure success and how can these metrics be integrated into their overall business strategy? We've got questions, and we're excited to dive into them and more at the 2024 Sustainable Fashion Forum NEXT WEEK, April 17-19, in Austin, Texas with a stellar lineup of speakers!
