Working with Cross-Cultural Communications, LLC has been a goal of mine since I became a licensed trainer for The Community Interpreter International in 2017. The leadership at CCC are wonderful human beings who care about the future of our profession and strive to deliver high-quality interpreter training. Our first collaboration was in 2022, when I spoke to their group about humanizing the work of VRI and OPI interpreting. The recording is still available at https://lnkd.in/gJaQTmwX. Now, I'm teaming up with CCC again to talk to professionals about not only how vicarious trauma affects us, but to give professionals a space to share their stories and find companionship with others who have experienced trauma too. Happy Tica Tuesday! Today’s feature is Cynthia E. Roat. Cindy is an interpreter trainer and international consultant on language access in health care and patient navigation. A native of upstate New York, she spent a decade working in rural areas of Latin America before moving to Seattle to earn her Master’s degree in International Public Health from the University of Washington. In 1992, Ms. Roat started working as a freelance medical and social-service Spanish-English interpreter and quickly became certified by Washington State Department of Social and Health Services. Her interest in systems change, however, led her into teaching interpreters, trainers and medical providers the basics of interpreting practice and consulting with healthcare administrators around the country on how to improve their language access programs. In the mid-2010s, Ms. Roat spent three years managing the unique Bilingual Patient Navigator program at Seattle Children's Hospital, before returning to her national consulting work. Over the past three decades, Ms. Roat has made significant contributions, both in the U.S. and abroad, in many areas of language access. She is the author of a wide array of key resources in the field and the primary developer of the original version of Bridging the Gap, for many years the country’s most widely-offered training for health care interpreters. Her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being adopted as an ancillary text in many interpreter training programs. Ms. Roat has consulted for a variety of large medical centers and healthcare systems. Always concerned about building grassroots capacity, Ms. Roat has been a mentor to interpreters, trainers and Language Access Coordinators around the U.S. She is a founding member of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC), where she currently serves on the board, a founding member of the Washington State Coalition on Language Access (WASCLA), and a former board member of the Northwest Translators & Interpreters Society (NOTIS) where she organized regular interpreter training workshops through the Community Interpreter Division. She is known nationally as an engaging speaker, a knowledgeable resource, and an energetic advocate for language access in general. Happy Tica Tuesday! Today’s feature is Sarah Wheeler, M.Ed., M.S.. Sarah grew up as a Child of Deaf Adults (CODA), and now has over 18 years of interpreting experience (including some time in the Air Force). She is passionate about the power of emotional intelligence and how it is key to making communication work. Sarah is also an EQ-i 2.0 certified practitioner and holds a Master’s in Interpreter Pedagogy and another in Psychology. While teaching in Interpreter Education Programs, she realized there was a big gap in training. Interpreters needed more than just language and technical skills. That’s why she started Building Bridges Learning. Her mission is to help interpreters develop emotional intelligence, improve their practice, and thrive in our ever-evolving digital world. Happy Tica Tuesday! Today’s feature is Michael J. Mulé. Michael is Deputy Director of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP). OCR ensures that recipients of federal financial assistance comply with federal civil rights and nondiscrimination laws including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) and the Safe Streets Act of 1968. Before OCR, Mr. Mulé was a senior attorney in the Civil Rights Division at DOJ for thirteen years where he led the Title VI state courts language access team and administered the website www.LEP.gov. Mr. Mulé is recognized as a subject matter expert on language access. He has presented over 75 civil rights trainings for federal and state agencies, attorneys, and judges, and has resolved many Title VI and language access matters. His publications address a range of topics from language access 101 to creating non-English digital content. From 2005 until 2010, he focused on improving access for low-income clients who were limited English proficient (LEP), Deaf, or hard of hearing as a civil rights attorney at the Empire Justice Center in Rochester, New York. I interpret this question ALL the time. Every day. Multiple times a day. What if the question were different? What if we started asking limited English proficient individuals the following questions: 1. What are your communication needs? 2. What is your preferred language? 3. Would you like an interpreter? Instead of placing the burden of effective communication on service users, what if providers carried that burden? “Do you know any English?” and “Would you like an interpreter?” are two different prompts. I have seen too often how patients will take stacks of paperwork home in English, with the expectation that their “x” family member will read it to them. It is unrealistic to put this burden on limited English proficient patients and call it equal access to healthcare. Let’s start asking better questions to close the health equity gap. Happy Tica Tuesday! Today’s feature is Shawn Norris. I met Shawn at the American Translators Association 64 Conference in Miami. Shawn’s enthusiasm for interpreter training was apparent the moment we met. He was full of ideas about how to bring accessible, quality training to medical interpreters and healthcare workers. I see a bright future for him and our profession! Shawn Norris, Ed K-12 | NIC | CoreCHI-P, is a healthcare language access leader, holding multiple key positions including President of the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (FRID) and Commissioner for the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). With a background enriched by his Deaf parents, Shawn is an active advocate in the Deaf community. He’s spent over a decade in the interpreting field, mentoring emerging interpreters and founding a local agency to enhance language accessibility in Jacksonville. Currently, he’s developing Hello Interpreters, an online community for interpreters and translators. Shawn is one of the few practitioners to have held ADA Coordinator, Section 1557 Coordinator, and Interpreter Services Coordinator roles concurrently within a hospital system. Coincidentally, Shawn was also the moderator for Timothy Riker, M.A., CDI, CLIP-R at the CCHI Summit. I attended Tim’s session and was introduced to an eye-opening video depicting the struggles of deaf and hard of hearing patients who try to access medical care. Welcome back for another Tica Tuesday! This week’s feature is Verónica Coronel-Escobar. This is perfect timing since Veronica was awarded the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) Educator of the Year award last weekend. I even got to see her in action during a session on medical interpreting and translation in Spanish. She and William Giller did a wonderful job co-teaching. Kudos to both! Veronica is a native of Quito, Ecuador, with a degree in business focusing on tourism. She holds a certificate in translation and interpreting from the The National Hispanic University and a professional certificate in translation from the University Of California Cooperative Extension San Diego. Certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) as a medical interpreter since 2016, Veronica currently serves as the Lead Interpreter and Translator for Education and Training at Stanford Medicine Partners Children's Health in Palo Alto, California. Veronica is committed to advancing language access, health equity, and cultural awareness. She developed the Interpreters Grand Rounds, a series of workshops for interpreters and translators at Stanford Children’s Health, facilitating professional development and continuing education. Furthermore, her dedication is reflected in her co-authorship of the article "Increasing In-Person Medical Interpreter in the NICU," published in the Journal of Perinatology, showcasing her contributions to healthcare communication. Additionally, she has been a subject matter expert on state and national projects related to language access, collaborating on initiatives like the "Resource Bundle: NICU Families with a Non-English Language of Preference" with the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative (CPQCC).
