About us
The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation was established in 1955 to encourage private support for the University of Hawaiʻi. Today, it is the central fundraising organization for the UH System providing a range of professional fundraising services to all 10 UH campuses, in addition to managing more than 3,400 gift accounts for the benefit of the university and its students. The UH Foundation is a private, institutionally related corporation designated as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a legally separate entity from the University of Hawaiʻi, the UH Alumni Association, and all other UH affiliates. However, the Foundation works closely with these organizations as well as with others in the community exclusively for the benefit of the university.

The University of Hawaii at Manoa's basic needs outreach connects students to resources for such crisis needs as emergency housing, textbook and technology support, counseling, rental assistance, temporary housing assistance and food. "Students can find themselves suddenly not knowing where their next meal is coming from or how they’re going to keep their kids in childcare,” says Wiliama Sanchez, Student Success Operations manager in Mānoa’s office of the Vice Provost for Student Success. "Then they’re at risk for giving up on studies, and when students leave school, the entire community suffers.” The UH Mānoa Basic Needs Fund is a beacon of hope for countless Mānoa students, offering them the critical support needed to meet their essential human needs. “By donating to this vital resource,” says Sanchez, “you empower students to navigate their educational journey with confidence, ensuring they have the means to say, ‘Yes, I can get through this,’ and persist through to graduation." It is our pleasure to welcome John Couch, former CEO of Alexander & Baldwin, and C. Scott Wo of C. S. Wo & Sons, LLC back to the UH Foundation Board of Trustees. Wo returns to the board after a one-year hiatus; he previously served from 2004 to 2023. Couch served on the board from 1992 to 1998, and recently gave $3.76 million to establish the first-ever gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship program at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine to train physicians to treat liver diseases, including cancer, in the islands. https://lnkd.in/gzidM5Uy.

A sculpture by Bumpei Akaji aptly named "RISE" — a gift from University of Hawaii at Manoa alumni Walter Dods, Jr., and Jay H. Shidler — was dedicated on Saturday as we marked the grand opening of the Walter Dods, Jr., RISE Center. Speakers at the event included Gov. Josh Green, Mayor Rick Blangiardi, UH President David Lassner, Richard Wacker, Tim Dolan and Susan Yamada of the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship, who was one of the driving forces behind the effort to build the student innovation and entrepreneurship center coupled with a dormitory for 374 students on the site of the historic Atherton YMCA. The Walter Dods, Jr., RISE Center was built as a public-private partnership between the University of Hawai‘i System, UH Foundation and Hunt Companies Hawai'i, with no taxpayer dollars spent. https://lnkd.in/geMucpZT

A $2 million gift from the Gilbert and Aileen Chuck Foundation will provide full scholarships for UH nursing students on Maui starting this fall. It creates the Kam Scholars Program for the University of Hawaii Maui College Nursing Program for the next 10 years. The merit-based scholarship program will provide about half of the first- and second-year associate of science nursing students with enough funds to cover the costs of tuition and books, fees and other costs associated with attendance.

A gift of $3.76 million from John Couch will establish the first-ever gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine that will train physicians to treat liver diseases, including cancer, in the islands. The first of its kind in Hawai‘i, the new program will leverage partnerships with health systems that provide JABSOM’s clinical learning environment, including The Queen's Health System, which currently has the only transplant program in the state. Hawaiʻi has the second-highest incidence of the most common form of liver cancer in the U.S. but has a chronic shortage of locally based hepatologists and healthcare providers who have the expertise to help prevent and treat liver disease.
