Ninety years ago, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Indian Reorganization Act, promoting Tribal self-governance and the revitalization of culture across Indian Country. This piece of legislation reversed Federal Indian policy aimed at assimilation and officially ended allotment. Under the Reorganization Act, Tribal Nations were encouraged to establish their own governmental bodies and ways to govern their members. 🎉 👉https://lnkd.in/em8KmAVN #IndianReorganizationAct #anniversary #NativeAmerican

One year ago, the Supreme Court affirmed the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act, upholding the responsibility of the United States to protect Indian children and families, and safeguard the future of Indian Tribes. 🎉 Today, we celebrate the outcome of Haaland v. Brackeen, which upheld Tribal sovereignty and protects our children. 💛 ❤️ 🖤 🤍 #ICWA #Anniversary #Haaland #NativeYouth

"The Indian Citizenship Act was something the federal government did without input from Tribes. Do we celebrate the act? Well, it’s a mixed bag of feelings. In the hands of someone like Secretary Deb Haaland, it is a powerful tool 100 years later. It's important to give people hope. We can look back on 100 years and see a lot of the similar challenges that we continue to face. It's important to talk about our past, but equally critical to acknowledge the people who have chosen to take on these challenges. In many ways, we have progressed. In many ways, a lot of these hardships and challenges have carried through the decades. Telling the story 100 years later ensures youth appreciate the older generations and encourage them exercise their right to vote," - Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland, June 2, 2024. US Indian Affairs reposted this
Today is the 100th anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924. The legislation was signed into law by President Calvin Coolidge on this day in 1924, granting full citizenship to American Indians and Alaska Native Americans. Though the Fifteenth Amendment, passed in 1870, granted all U.S. citizens the right to vote regardless of race, it wasn't until 1924 that American Indians and Alaska Natives could fully enjoy this right. #IndianCitizenshipAct #NativeAmericanRights
