Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA

On April 18th, together with State Farm, we unveiled the completely refurbished Dominique Wilkins Court at the Good Neighbor Gym at the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA in Southwest Atlanta. It will mark an extra special occasion as the Atlanta Hawks and State Farm’s 10th Good Neighbor Club reveal and court makeover. The Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA has been an important figure in Atlanta as a home for local high school kids, a center for voting, and a home for community impact. This unveiling celebrated the YMCA’s role in greater Atlanta and the story of these men who helped shape this community.

On Saturday, April 20, 2024, YMCA of Metro Atlanta representatives attended a historic celebration honoring the Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Staff members Meta and Robert accepted the prestigious Dr. Parlett L. Moore Centennial Sigma Beta Club Award on behalf of Group Vice President Monteil Weeks and the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA. This award recognized leaders dedicated to empowering local youth through community programs. The Lambda Sigma Chapter, the oldest and largest in the Southeastern region, also honored other impactful leaders like civil rights icon John Lewis and influential businessman HJ Russell.

When it comes to supporting the needs of children and families throughout metro Atlanta, the Y considers Children's Healthcare of Atlanta one of its most essential partners. Together, we provide communities greater access to swim lessons and water safety, behavioral and mental healthcare services to youth, and the Y leans on Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to provide Y staff the essential skills & training to better support children. This weekend, as part of the YMCA Boys and Young Men of Color initiative, the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA partnered with the Morehouse College National Alumni Association to create an interactive overnight retreat at the YMCA Camp High Harbour outdoor residential camp on Lake Allatoona. 35 local high school participants and college students participated in outdoor activities including zip lining, the rock climbing wall, archery, mindfulness exercises, and art and humanities. The YMCA Camp High Harbour staff provided an amazing experience for all!

On January 13, 2024, The Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA presented awards to 8 students from HBCUs during the First Annual Andrew Young HBCU Scholarship Award Ceremony at the Millennium Gate Museum in Atlanta. The students received scholarships through a partnership with McGraw Hill, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and The Andrew Young Foundation, in collaboration with Good Of All.

What a meaningful morning at the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who believed, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” We’re grateful to the volunteers from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Aprio, Morehouse College, UPS, & YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta for their service today!
