I recently listened to a fascinating podcast episode from "The Business of Stories" called "Why Storytelling is Essential to Science with Randy Olson." In this episode, Olson discusses the #ABT formula (And, But, Therefore), which he discovered by studying the writers of Southpark. The ABT formula is a simple yet powerful tool to enhance your storytelling. It involves replacing the word "and" with "but" to create a more engaging narrative. This small change can make a big difference in capturing emotions and making your story more compelling. For all #EventProfs hosting events in Louisville, KY this July, I hope you partake in the city's "Plastic Free July" sustainability effort. "'Plastic Free July is a great opportunity for everyone to recognize their power as consumers and businesses to contribute to a greener and healthier city,' said Mayor Greenberg." While it is focused on residents, why not contribute to the cause by reducing plastics at your event? Here are a few ways to do it: 💦 Replace plastic water bottles with water refill stations and provide refillable water bottles/cups 🧑🏾‍🌾 Source food and beverage locally to reduce packaging 🍽️ Opt for reusable plates, utensils and glasses 🍂 Use cloth napkins instead of disposable paper napkins 🚯  Have linens and napkins delivered WITHOUT the plastic around them 🎁  Choose eco-friendly giveaways made from sustainable materials rather than plastic items. ♻️ Provide recycling stations with clearly labeled bins for plastic, paper, and other recyclable materials. Continuing with our flyer series, I want to offer a couple of quick tips: Often times we may not have an idea of where to begin with our flyer design and so you may search for inspiration from sources like Pinterest, Google, etc., and while this isn't a bad approach, I find the best inspiration should come from yours or your client's choice of imagery. In this case, a 'wine cellar' stock photo offers the color scheme and design direction for the rest of this flyer. Because Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club has a wealthier clientele, we want to ensure the wine cellar photo chosen matches a more refined and elevated wine cellar one might fine in a luxury home. My second tip is to PLAY! It is completely okay to not know if a direction of yours is going to work out. Composition can't be known at the beginning of your creations. Take an idea and just run with it and see where it goes. If you hit a dead end, start again, but you'll find what happens the majority of the time is you end up in a place you didn't expect that compliments your initial vision. In this case, I played with the idea of the text being on the shelves of a wine cellar and it happened to work the way I wanted it to, but it took a lot of maneuvering around to get it to that point.
