Reflections from 3rd Annual NYU Coaching and Technology Submit Big congrats to Dr. Woody Woodward, PhD, PCC and Anna A. Tavis, PhD for another successful event, I've attended all three - the growth and enhancements are impressive! The summit got off the a strong strong with the "Opening Fireside Chat" between Dr. Woody and Nicole Forward (she, her) - head of Executive Coaching and Feedback @ Netflix, I appreciate that she names the "elephant in the room" regarding the coaching profession's current status with DEIB, given the aim of coaching, we should not lag behind in this critical area of human development and engagement - many organizations are way ahead of us - loved the call-out. This point was reinforced during Day Two's fireside chat with Matthew Breitfelder (Apollo Global Management) - it was great to hear from HR leaders in the field! One of the highlights from Day One, for me, where the 8 laser Emerging Technology sessions, they were all interesting, yet 3 stood out to me: (1) Deeper Signals, (2) AgileBrain, and (3) Yoodli - we are already working with Ovida, so it was not new to me - yet a great resource! The founders panel (with AceUp, AIIR, Optify, and Valance) was a great opportunity to learn about how these more established platforms are up to- a number of important and key insights from this session! I enjoyed the Day Two Opening Panel, "The State of AI in Coaching," especially some of the data shard by Alex from Ovida, I was also very impressed with Tim Harrison, great to see that with young, emerging professionals like him, the future can be bright! An of course, as someone who operates in the Coaching Education space myself, it was good to hears various perspectives on The Future of Coach Education in an Era of AI. It was good to hear from, and interact, with many leaders in the field, too many to mentions here, yet a few including Jonathan Passmore (Henley B-School & EZRA), Jonathan Kirschner (CEO of AIIR - World-class leadership development, assessment, and coaching services), Alex Haitoglou, Bryan Watson, and David Drake, PhD (Ovida - very powerful video-based and AI powered platform for enhanced communication across use cases); Magdalena Nowicka Mook (ICF CEO); Jeffrey E. Auerbach (College of Executive Coaching); Joan T. Cook, MCC (EY); and Brian Underhill, Ph.D., PCC (CEO CoachSource), to name a few. And of course it was great to connect with a number of 3CP alums. What advice would you give to women seeking to enter the AI field? Dar'shun Kendrick: "Produce. Women are used to multitasking. That’s one of the best uses of generative and applied AI, in my opinion. So I know women can produce a new AI product to make lives easier because we are the ones that need it. You don’t need to develop the product — you just need to be a visionary. Someone else can build it. Show up. There are only so many spaces we can be kept out of. Continue to learn. Technology changes so fast. My colleague Jon Stemmle and I conducted a 2024 survey on generative AI with employee communications professionals. Very good interview of Alex 'Sandy' Pentland who's joining Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI)'s Digital Economy Lab; these 5 arguments especially resonated with me: 1) "We also need to reduce partisan animosity online. Currently, digital media are designed to get us to react quickly, which results in unthinking responses that in turn lead to cascades of behavior where everyone becomes outraged. We need a system that instead encourages people to communicate in ways that support democratic processes rather than tearing them apart. Large-scale experiments find that online discussions are improved when people are encouraged to reflect a little bit on what they are about to say. For example, we see less division and outrage online when we add an extra step that allows time for reflection before replying or forwarding, or add a prompt to consider what a comment will do to your reputation." 2) "we need to draw a line between individual expression and mass expression. For example, consider the case where influencers often have more than a million “friends” on social media. Anyone with that many people following them can make money and build a reputation while saying whatever they want. And I think these overly powerful voices ought to be treated like businesses and not like individuals. They shouldn’t be able to cry “fire” in a crowded theater or tell outright lies. Those are basic standards we demand of other businesses [like] TV news shows or newspapers can’t publish something just to generate outrage. (...) If you’re going to express your ideas to a million people, then you’re a business and you ought to be regulated like a business." 3) "In some cases, fixing the problem will require changing often subtle little things down in the guts of the internet. As an example, if someone is producing 50,000 tweets a day, that’s a bot, not a human. That’s an obvious case, but there are other things we can do to find bots more efficiently, determine when foreign nations are interfering in elections, and better deal with ransomware and cyberattacks. The problems we have now evolved because the architecture of the internet was never completed. And now maybe the time has finally come to finish the job." 4) "it’s not artificial general intelligence, or AGI, that worries me. It’s that AI is becoming pervasive in so many parts of our lives, including our medical system, our transportation system, and our schooling system. It’s going to be everywhere, just like the previous waves of AI were. And we need to make sure that it’s prosocial." 5) "AI has always been and continues to be a way of finding and using patterns in data. So, if you want to control AI, you have to control the data it feeds on by demanding privacy rights and ownership rights over data. Without that, AI will just run amok. Data are like the food for AI, and if you want to control AI, you have to control the data."

The McKinsey Global Institute aggregated a richly granular data set of micro-, small-, and medium-size enterprises (#MSMEs) and large #companies across 12 broad sectors, 68 level-two subsectors, and more than 200 level-three subsectors for 16 countries that account for more than half of #globalGDP. In these countries, MSMEs on average have only half the #productivity of large companies, and less than that in #emergingeconomies. Raising MSMEs to top-quartile levels relative to large companies represents value equivalent to 5 percent of GDP in #advancedeconomies and 10 percent in emerging economies.

⏮️🏗️ REVERSE INNOVATION is a backward term. It was never aspirational (or accurate). Let’s move away from it 🚮.  -- The term #reverseinnovation implies that innovation in low-resource settings is unexpected. Throughout my life and career dedicated to innovation in low-resource settings, I have witnessed the opposite. And that should be expected. -- #Innovation is a unique solution to a problem. The problems faced in low-resource settings are—by definition—more challenging and/or more consequential, and so, it follows that solutions will have to be more creative and/or more impactful.🧠📈 Some alternatives: 🚦🏗️ PRIORITIZED innovation 🛟🏗️ IMPACTFUL innovation 🌐🏗️ BROAD USE innovation (other suggestions?) These terms recognize the utility of investing energy into creatively solving problems that have extreme consequences and few alternatives. They also remind us that resource constraints exist in every country and population and are broadly useful. Tremendous conversation yesterday. My thanks to Matt Alex for putting this together to Nicole Baldassarre for being a thought-provoking moderator, Joe Sabado, MBA for his deep insights and strategy, and to the attendees for raising insightful questions and comments. Lots of take aways and food for further thought including aspects related to - What drives change in HigherEd & could AI be the catalyst? - Are concerns about AI because of an "institutional" focus or based on concerns for students and the efficacy of learning? The difference between AI driven and AI enabled - Areas of greatest potential for AI to make a true difference in "learning" - Are we (the HigherEd community) focused on areas of current or past relevance - Can AI be implemented for operations by "insertion" or is a systems level assessment needed for success? - Workforce skills, academic knowledge, and competencies These, and many others, are conversations we need to have - focusing on the future, not the past, and through a student/learner centered lens rather than one based on "whats good for the institution" Change is hard but its needed if HigherEd is to remain relevant and of value in a fast converging & continuously changing world. AI is not a panacea but it definitely illuminates our prior shortcomings and could be the catalyst for the hard discussions needed for a true transformation.

If you're in a small submersible that looks like a giant kazoo and going to visit the Titanic seven miles down at the bottom of the ocean, and the captain of the vessel is using a Gameboy controller. Pay attention to that. What are you checking out down there? Oh, I see what happened. This ship sank. Now I understand why it never made it into port. If the fish where you are have eyes like Shelley Duvall and a bendy straw with a work blade hanging off their head, you do not belong there. If the fish are going, I can't see a goddamn thing. You won't either. 3. Number three, fall in love. It's easy to fall in love with people. I suggest falling in love with anything and everything. Every chance you get. Fall in love with your coffee, your sneakers, your blue zone parking space. I've had a lot of fun in life. Falling in love with stupid, meaningless physical objects. But the object I love the most is the clear barrel BIC pen, $1.29 for a box of ten. I can fall in love with a car turn signal switch that has a nice feel to it. A pizza crust that collapses with just the right amount of pressure. I have truly spent my life focusing on the smallest things imaginable, completely oblivious to all the big issues of living. Find something where you love the good parts and don't mind the bad parts too much. The torture you're comfortable with. This is the golden path to victory in life. Work. Exercise. Relationships. ... About work, You know how they always say nobody ever looks back on their life and wishes they spent more time at the office? Well, why? Why don't they? Guess what? Depends on the job. If you took a stupid job that you find out you hate and you don't leave, that's your fault. Don't blame work. Work is wonderful. I definitely will not be looking back on my life wishing I worked less. If that's not how you feel at work. Quit. On your lunch break. Disappear. Make people go. What happened to that guy? I don't know, he said he was getting something to eat. Never came back.
