I started wanting to do communications studies and a minor in screenwriting, but shifted to PR once I learned more about it! I found the aspect of working behind the scenes mixing together writing, media knowledge, and creative thinking interesting and a great fit for my future career.    What is your biggest piece of advice for people coming up in the media and communications industry? My biggest piece of advice is to not be afraid to share your ideas with others. It can be intimidating to share a different point of view or offer your unique way of thinking when you are the most junior person in the room, but any good communications professional should and will welcome your ideas with open arms. Take ownership of your thinking and apply it to your work! Also, welcome and encourage any and all kinds of feedback and take it as a means to grow. The quality of your work and the way you work with your team will greatly improve once you apply the feedback you receive, even if it stings at first!    Why do you think local matters?   Local media matters now more than ever as our online methods of communication are inundated with pieces that toe the line between opinion and fact. As events happen and social media takes the first stab at forming an opinion, local news is able to offer a perspective no one else can get: what really is happening, how the community feels about it, how they will be affected, and more. As media keeps transforming, so does local, but its prevalence remains an important factor to position community voices at the forefront of what truly matters.

The Target 🎯 The targets for this campaign were individuals entering adulthood and those reflecting on their career and life skills. The Strategy 📌 We worked with three micro-influencers who crafted Instagram posts detailing their personal experiences with adulthood and connecting them with key aspects of the book, encouraging their followers to read it for guidance & reflection. Paid amplification was used to extend the reach and engagement of the organic content, targeting audiences beyond the influencers' followers to ensure maximum engagement. This perspective is correct. However, specific responsibilities of Social Media Managers can vary greatly depending on their role within an organization; • Roles and duties are mostly influenced by the bandwidth, composition, and capabilities of the surrounding departments. • In many instances, Social Media Managers (myself included), find ourselves taking on tasks such as graphic design and video editing due to the absence of provided professionals in these areas. — a topic worthy of its own discussion but maybe for a different time. To add on that statement, some may argue it’s important to decline tasks that fall outside our “primary responsibilities”. Yet, there’s a part of me that embraces these challenges that drove me into discovering skills that enabled my growth beyond being a Social Media Manager. (Transitioning in learning pitching, designing pitch decks, crafting key messaging, voice, and a lot more. - again a topic worthy of its own discussion.) I believe an entry-level position DOES NOT necessarily equate to entry-level outcomes. I’ve witnessed firsthand how individuals in these said roles achieve beyond distinction results! I’m coming out… as a TikTok Creator. 🫣 What started as a hobby has grown into a part-time job as I’ve now spent the past year as a member of the Creativity Rewards Program with over 16K followers and 3.7M cumulative video likes under my belt. Other fun stats: • I currently have an engagement rate of about 40%, which is over 20% more than the average engagement rate for micro-influencers (10k - 50k followers), per Collabstr • My followers are over 80% female, and about half of my total followers are 25 - 34 years old • Over 80% of them live in the US, with 30% living in NYC • I’ve had about 15 videos reach over 1M views, two of which have happened in the last month! • And perhaps my most fun fact - Julia Fox frequently ‘likes’ my videos! Oh, I just had to reshare this one. We're not filling intern or entry-level positions. We're a diverse, ever-evolving group of professionals from various backgrounds and degrees. We wear many hats, bridge gaps between disciplines, and bring a love of good storytelling to the digital sphere along with us. We come from different educational backgrounds and adapt to new processes and ways of thinking: If we're not analytical, we learn to be. If we're not creative, we learn to be. We need to stop normalizing social media addiction. ESPECIALLY if you work in social media. "I'm doing research!" is not an excuse to spend hours mindlessly scrolling on TikTok or Instagram. As a social media manager, I'll be the first to admit my screen time used to range from 4-7 hours depending on the day. And while yes, sometimes it really IS research... It's usually not. When social media is your job, it can be extremely hard to "leave work at work." You're constantly moderating mentions, checking if those 6 am scheduled posts went up okay, and researching trending topics because what's hot right now will be old news in 15 minutes. But if I'm honest, there's a fine line between professional obligation and personal obsession. Spending hours and hours consuming content is not healthy, no matter what way you pitch it. The purpose of social is to connect with people, foster community, and inspire change. Let's not forget that we can do it offline, too.

Here are some things I’ve learned so far working in social: ✨ If you don’t understand or know your current audience, then you won’t create content that’s worth engaging with. ✨ If you don’t understand or know your target audience, then you won’t create content that’s worth following for. ✨ You can not create any kind of social strategy with just a “hunch.” Sometimes those work but an effective strategy requires research. ✨ Social strategy will change constantly because social changes constantly— there is no one fix. ✨ Community building is important. Tap into those fandoms that are underserved. When you understand and serve your audience — trying to get ahead of the algorithm starts to be less of a priority.

I always joke about how I learned Social Media Management and Community Management, simply from being chronically online as a teenager and into my college years. When I talk to other people in the industry whether social media or gaming-specific, about how I can stay aligned with internet culture, my answer is always the same: listen, analyze, and deconstruct. Platforms change. Algorithms change. Demographics change. You know what doesn't change? Understanding and seeing the trends when you listen.
