Computational Scientist

Position Function

Enables research and instruction requiring advanced cyberinfrastructure by providing direct technical solutions and support, assisting in the adoption of new technologies, and establishing scientific collaborations and partnerships with research groups. Contributes to creation and maintenance of advanced cyberinfrastructure training modules. Monitors trends, developments and best practices in advanced cyberinfrastructure for research and instruction in anticipation of changing requirements and opportunities.

Department Profile

The High Performance Computing Collaboratory (HPC²), an evolution of the MSU NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Computational Field Simulation, at Mississippi State University is a coalition of member institutes and centers that share a common core objective of advancing the state-of-the-art in computational science and engineering using high performance computing; a common approach to research that embraces a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented concept; and a commitment to a full partnership between education, research, and service. The mission of the HPC² is to serve the University, State, and Nation through excellence in computational science and engineering.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Enables research and instruction requiring advanced cyberinfrastructure by providing direct technical solutions and support, assisting in the adoption of new technologies, and establishing scientific collaborations and partnerships with research groups.
  • Contributes to creation and maintenance of advanced cyberinfrastructure training modules.
  • Monitors trends, developments, and best practices in advanced cyberinfrastructure for research and instruction in anticipation of changing requirements and opportunities.
  • Researches and stays up to date on new industry project management standards, best practices, and approaches.
  • Prepares management reports and summaries for senior administration, executive, steering and advisory committees; acts as advisor to executive committees; serves on various university committees, communities of practice, and task forces related to IT project management.
  • Manages high level assignments and allocation of technical resources, including negotiating and coordinating initiatives that involve staff in other departments/areas/teams; coordinates large-scale IT projects with wide audiences in support of academic initiatives.
  • Provides highest level of operational leadership and coordination of staff members to define IT project management methodologies and standards; provides direction and guidance on high priority IT projects/initiatives.
  • Establishes short-term and long-term operational objectives, including managing project timelines/deliverables and developing resource plans for multi-phase IT projects/initiatives.
  • Works collaboratively with other IT project management leaders across departments in recommending standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position has limited supervisory responsibility over temporarily established small teams.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Science or engineering degree in field that uses computational methods.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in an area of study related

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and document software business rules and requirements using diagrams, written use cases, and user stories.
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to self-direct efforts to complete requirements.
  • Ability to use Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Power Point).

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No unusual physical requirements.
  • Requires no heavy lifting, nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
  • Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one’s control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
  • Job frequently requires sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
  • Job occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
