The Newington Public Schools is seeking an active, highly visible, responsive, community-focused evening security officer to monitor and support the Adult Education Program and all other after school activities and functions at Newington High School. The standard working hours are 3:00-9:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with additional opportunities as needed. Compensation ranges from $17.75 - $21.50, which may be adjusted based on a candidate's experience. Position Description
Assists evening school employees in maintaining order and discipline, preventing crime, investigating violations of school board policies and detaining students violating the law or school board policies on school property or at school-sponsored events and who is responsible solely for ensuring the safety, security, and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school . Prevents and addresses disruption of the educational process through daily operations including routine patrol, crime prevention, surveillance, investigation, emergency response, recovery of property, and related activities to ensure a safe, secure, and orderly school environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Specific Responsibilities
- Receives supervision from the administration for the enforcement of all school rules.
- Assume primary responsibility for supervising the school grounds and providing appropriate communication to correct problems.
- Coordinates with staff to promote physical security measures at school buildings.
- Provide initial contact with the police department if necessary.
- The evening security officer will be responsible for providing protection of school property.
- Be available and visible in the school building and school property.
- Discourage loitering and inappropriate behavior by students outside and inside of the school building. Intruders will be removed from campus or referred to the Police Department.
- Provide assistance to staff as appropriate.
- Provide other assistance as requested by the administration.
- Standard working hours 3:00-9:00 PM, Monday - Friday, at Newington High School. Additional hours/days as needed.
- Provides security for the Adult Education Program and other activities occurring within the school, such as sporting events and other after school activities.
- Conduct general patrols of the building throughout the evening.
- May perform additional tasks and duties as requested.
- Knowledge of: basic state and local laws, institutional security, safety measures, first aid and CPR techniques.
- Ability to learn and interpret school policies and procedures to be enforced; respond appropriately to sensitive and emergency situations; communicate tactfully and effectively; exercise good judgment when responding to safety and security violations and emergencies; establish cooperative working relationships with students and staff contacted in the course of performing assigned duties; to follow oral and written instructions.
- Good oral communications skills, good human relations and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to stand at assigned station and patrol assigned building and grounds for long periods of time. Standing, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, and kneeling may be required while patrolling school grounds and responding to incidents.
- Sufficient strength to restrain/detain aggressive students, intruders, and trespassers who may physically resist.
- Ability to immediately respond to an emergency in any part of the location assigned or any other Newington school as needed.
