Position Summary

The position of STEM student intern provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable hands-on experience in the STEM field. You will work alongside experienced engineers to contribute to the development and implementation of software/hardware solutions. Student interns occasionally provide event support when students, staff, and families attend UVA-sponsored or hosted events. The student will work in accordance with all applicable laws, guidelines, and UVA policies. This position works up to 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participate in the software/hardware development lifecycle, including coding, debugging, and testing.
  • Act as a Teaching Assistant.
  • Assist with research and development of new technologies and tools.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other team members to design and implement software/hardware solutions.
  • Document code and technical processes.
  • May participate in other software engineering tasks as assigned.
  • Able to communicate technical problems/solutions in a clear and concise manner that can be understood by a student and their corresponding grade level.
  • Additional responsibilities as directed.

Office Support

  • Greet persons entering the office, determine the nature and purpose of the visit and direct or escort the visitors to specific destinations.
  • Operate campus telephone lines to answer, screen, or forward calls; this includes: providing information, taking messages, or scheduling appointments.
  • Provide information about the organization, such as the location of departments or offices, employees within the organization, or services provided.
  • Collect, sort, distribute, or prepare mail, messages, or courier deliveries.
  • Maintain storage areas.
  • Perform the process of opening and closing the office when needed.

Event Support

  • Greet and register visitors.
  • Distribute information and explain admission and registration processes and operations.
  • Be service-oriented by actively looking for ways to help staff and visitors
  • Travels occasionally to support statewide mandated test administration and to participate in student-sponsored events.

Required Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience in programming and problem-solving
  • Current student at an accredited College or University.
  • Must be in good standing (Cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher)

Minimum Education Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in at least 9-semester units or 12 quarter units at an accredited college or university. Enrollment must be maintained throughout the course of employment, except for summer and winter breaks.
  • For registered college students with a permanent disability, the minimum unit requirement is waived.
  • A student in his/her final semester/quarter who needs less than 9 semester units or 12 quarter units to graduate with a four-year degree, needs only be enrolled part-time with written verification from the registrar of upcoming graduation as proof.
  • Student Interns must submit their grades and maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA each semester for continued employment.
