Overview Of Position

Leave Replacement Position: This is a leave replacement position, for the duration of the permanent employee's leave only. The anticipated leave is one year.

This position will be responsible for a range of family support services required by the Head Start and Seattle Preschool Program. It operates at a regional level and the responsibilities include: recruitment, selection and enrollment support for preschool families; completion and follow up on family partnerships ; provision of triaged supports, including home visits or family connection meetings, as appropriate and collaboration with school and community partners, for high needs families in crisis or with significantly challenging goals/circumstances; engaging families in support of their children’s goals; planning and implementing parent education activities, including providing training on parenting education; and engaging health care professionals in support of children’s medical and dental exams and follow up services.

Essential Functions

  • Works with internal and external partners to recruit eligible families support enrollment into the program, coordinates with and guides classroom staff in enrolling families in the program; recommends placement of children; ensures full enrollment for the region.

  • Conducts written and oral assessments of each family; uses assessments, family goals and other information to create an individualized plan for each family; reviews plans with families, modifying them as appropriate; specializes in work with families with high needs/challenging circumstances; makes home visits to support families; supports coordination with other district services and follow through.

  • Works with parents, health care provider organizations and Program Nurse to ensure medical and dental program requirements are supported at the regional level, including visits, immunization records, medical and dental coverage.

  • Maintains records of each family's progress and development; develops a regional tracking system to monitor family goals, home visits, referrals, advocacy work and related information; prepares reports as requested by Program Manager and other program staff; creates fliers, meeting agendas, activity notices and other materials.

  • Serves as a primary contact for assigned families and the public; responds to inquiries regarding program services; ensures that the needs of program participants and families are being met in a timely and responsive manner; assists families that move to make the transition to the Head Start ECEAP, SPP or other preschool programs.

  • Provides training and resources on the following topics: financial literacy, health literacy, English language learners, as well as other topics identified by the program through its planning, community assessment and self-assessment processes.

  • Researches, collects and makes available to families and staff resources and data on father engagement, literacy, attendance and the importance of biliteracy/bilingualism. Writes articles for newsletter to families.

  • Serves as a primary liaison between teachers, parents and the District's Transportation Office to resolve disputes/conflicts related to scheduling, boundaries, behavior problems, complaints or other transportation issues.

  • Leads the planning and implementation of regional parent meetings and parent involvement activities.

  • Collaborates with District enrollment staff and parents/guardians to facilitate the kindergarten enrollment process; ensures that all eligible program participants are registered during the open-enrollment period.

  • Responds as necessary to the needs of families in crisis, coordinating with district and community programs and resources.

  • Guides preschool teaching staff in family services work with parents.

  • Leads/co-leads collaboration with building family support staff and regional family file reviews to identify supports for children and families.

  • Spends time in classrooms to assist teachers and get to know children.

  • Identifies, researches and responds to children's absences, putting together materials to promote attendance and developing strategies program-wide to respond to absences.

  • Lift up to 40 pounds
  • Move freely around in a preschool environment
  • Obtain a First Aid/CPR card and Food Handlers' Permit
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information and records
  • Provide evidence of a current physical examination and regular, periodic examinations every two years or in compliance with the current program requirements

Education

Typical Qualifications

Associate's degree in social services or a closely related field

Preferred Education

Bachelor's degree in social services or a closely related field

Years Of Relevant Experience

3 years coordinating services in a family-centered social services or education program.

Preferred Experience

5 years coordinating services in a family-centered social services or education program working with families providing social services

Preferred Certifications & Licenses

Licensing or certification in social services field.

Valid State of Washington Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Clearances

Criminal Justice fingerprint and background check.

Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours employees are anticipated to work during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Any employee who is scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year is eligible for benefits.
