Summary

  • Vector control technicians should be versatile in their abilities to set mosquito and possibly other arthropod surveillance equipment, be able to identify mosquito larval breeding sites, identify mosquitoes to species mostly at the adult level and secondarily at the larval level, be able to converse and answer questions with members of the public about mosquitoes and other arthropod vectors and the disease in which they carry, and be familiar with the concepts of integrated pest (mosquito) management.
  • Individual will also be required to assist in other environmental inspection duties including, but not limited to, food sanitation, on-site sewage facilities (OSSF), swimming pools, and storm water.
  • During the in season (April to mid-November), overtime may be required with minimal vacation availability.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Identifies adult mosquitoes to a species level and prepares samples to be tested.
  • Sets arthropod vector surveillance equipment including, but not limited to, CDC gravid traps, BG Sentinel traps, and CDC light traps.
  • Performs environmental inspections for mosquito breeding sources during complaints and out in unincorporated parts of the County when available.
  • Treats vector breeding sources with various techniques and pesticides to efficiently control vector species including larviciding and adulticiding.
  • Works independently making specialized and detailed surveys.
  • Educates the general public in matters of public health via presentations and meetings.
  • Interacts with members of the general public and other government officials.
  • Appears in court as part of enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintains and updates records.
  • Investigates areas where arthropod related illnesses have occurred.
  • Travels to sites where inspections and education are taking place.
  • Performs all other related duties involved in the operation of the Public Health Department as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

NOTE: YOU MUST FILL OUT THE WORK HISTORY and EDUCATION SECTIONS OF APPLICATION TO SHOW YOU HAVE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION AS REQUIRED BY HIRING DEPARTMENT OR BE DISQUALIFIED.

TO APPLY, must have a Bachelor's degree or higher with 30 hours of science, preferably in entomology.

TO APPLY, must possess valid and current driver license. Note: A Texas driver license is required to hold the position.

Eligible for registration as a Professional Sanitarian by the State of Texas.

Must be able to acquire a Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) non-commercial political license (with vector section).

If hired, must provide proof of educational attainment

at New Hire Processing or during the promotional process.

Tarrant County will conduct background checks on new hires that will include a criminal background check related to convictions and deferred adjudications in the past seven years and may include credit reports, motor vehicle records, employment records and educational attainment. A conviction or deferred adjudication is not an automatic bar to employment. Each case is considered individually.

Physical Demands And Work Environment & Other Requirements

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift, and carry at least fifty pounds. The incumbent must also be able to wear a respirator.

Regular attendance is essential. Incumbent must arrive at work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assigned schedule. Incumbent must have the ability to work well with others. Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of themselves and others. Requested accommodations to work hours and schedules are considered on an individual basis.
